Calc - how to move (drag-n-drop using mouse) or cut/insert rows/columns

Thanks, someone else also already pointed this out...

I think it would be a very good thing if Libreoffice adopted the same behavior, while keeping the current drag-n-drop capability as well...

Just commented in your bug...

Thx Tim...

Hi
I just tried out the various options (Ctrl, Alt, Shift combos) in
Excel 2010 and there really doesn't seem to be a way of dragging a
column into a new position. It seems you have to cut or copy first.

It's possible i missed something or that the 1 machine i tried it on
might be weird somehow.

Chris is about to get on with the finances and is going to wonder why
i moved his cursor

Just filed a bug to enhance the Documentation for this Help entry, and added this to your bug too:

Oh, wow, I doubt I'd have EVER figured that out on my own...

Thx Mark!

Egregi Signori:

Distinti saluti, C. Gonzato

Some time ago I created bug 39936 asking asking for an enhancement that
would work the way Excel does.  Maybe some more encouragement on that
issue might move it up in terms of priority.

Did you miss my request for anyone who knows how Excel does this to
please chime in?

I still can't figure out how to do this in Excel.

It's much the same in Excel, except it's Shift+drag rather than
Alt+drag. I think you also have to drag from the few-pixels-wide border
around the selection, rather than from anywhere within the selection as
LO allows.

Glad you were wrong - being able to drag-n-drop is so much easier, and now I can do it in both Libre and Excel...

Hi
I'm usually glad when i'm wrong because i learn something and usually
find an easier way of doing whatever it was.

I've not tried the Excel edges one yet. Even if it does work i think
the LibreOffice one is easier and more forgiving but maybe i'm biased.

Tom - please STOP blindly clicking Reply All on every single message - and see my next reply about your stupid advice to everyone else to do the same stupid thing..

I do NOT need to see your messages TWICE - I'm on the list, dammit.

I have confirmed it works, but I agree the Libreoffice way is *much* easier.

Hi
Ok, so moving the column in Excel is a little easier IF you have
reasonably fine motor control of the mouse and understand about
watching the way the cursor changes (which many office workers seem to
have trouble with (or is that just in my place and previous 3
places?)).

The problem seems to be that if you press the Ctrl key just before you
drop then it replaces everything in the column under it. Pressing Alt
has no effect. Pressing Shift does make it fairly clear that the
column is going to be inserted between 2 columns.

So i still think that Calc is better at this. It think it does
involve knowing more rather than being intuitive as the cursor doesn't
seem to change at all so it doesn't give any clues that certain things
can be done. On the other hand most people don't notice the cursor
changes and i missed it myself when i was in a rush the other day.

As for blindly clicking on "Reply to all" i tried the way Tanstaafi
suggested and it meant i had to do quite a bit more. It wasn't just a
case of deleting the one address because i then needed to copy&paste
the Users List address and then delete the address left in the CC. Of
course i could have just cut&paste but cutting risks losing stuff. So
it's like a lot of these things, a LOT more complicated than
necessary. Personally i usually find my email 'client' removes
duplicates for me. On the odd occasion when one slips through it's
much easier for me to hit delete than it would have been for the other
person to edit all their address lines. So i am sorry if i appear
rude but please contact the postmaster of the list to ask them to
change the list's behaviour back to the way that used to work so much
better,
