HSQLDB migration how-to

Hi all,

With 6.3 release, when you open a database, the UI would show the user a
link, on the dialog box which starts the process, to a wiki page with
detailed information on what was possible with Migration Assistant(MA)
from HSQLDB to another engine and on how to perform a migration with or
without use of the MA too.

The link in the dialog box will point to this wiki page here:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/HowTo/MigrateFromHSQLDB

It is empty for the moment but documentation team is working on it (a
preview of the structure is on Drew page here
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/User:Drew/tmpMA

The page will be marked for translation with the wiki translation
extension.

Cheers,
Sophie

Hi,

Sophie, great to hear this.

Just a suggestion - would it not be better to move that wiki page, once it
is finished in English and maybe localized in a few languages, to LO help
(by the time of string freeze, LO63RC1)?

Some (corporate/government/military etc.) users do not have internet access
due to security reasons, also wiki is simpler to hack, servers can be down
etc.

If local help is not present, the system can still redirect to wiki help,
that mechanism is already in place.

From what I understood during the ESC call last week (see the minutes at
the end of this mail), it is transitional until the assistant does its
job. For the moment, some cases are not took into account during the
migration and can mess the database, this is what will be explained in
the how-to, what you should do if your database is out of what the
migration tool can process.
The wiki page will adapt to the progress of the migration assistant
until it's able to migrate all or most types of databases. Drew will
blog also about the progress.
So, I think it's better to have it in the wiki for the moment and have
the help page for 6.4 when and if the migration assistant issues are solved.

Uhm, just for the case 6.4 will still have HSQLDB integrated (because of
existing problems): shouldn't we link to a wiki page with version
numbers so we can track the changes based on different versions?

Best regards,

Dennis
