No QuickStarter? (Linux)

+1

That's strange, here is a screenshot from my LO 3.5.3.2: http://www.parentreprise.com/images/LibreOffice/LibreOffice3.5.3.2NoQuickStarter.png

Cheers,

Marc

That's because it's a distro version & is up to the distro packager to
include or exclude. There is no QS in the current versions of LO
standard linux (at least not in the .deb versions - I've not tried the
rpm versions in awhile).

Hi
Over 1Gb and 1GHz sounds like waaay more than enough.  Even if you are running Ubuntu that should be opening fine.  Maybe 10-15 seconds?  On this machine it takes just under 10 seconds and it's very similar to your machine by the sounds of it.  Mine is over 2GHz but has low cache.

Gnu&Linux with 8Gb ram!!?!?

8 Gb=1 GB.

Thanks to NoOp, now I know this is not a bug.
I hope that Openoffice.org/Libreoffice become a "lightweight" application
for many years, but it's startup is still somewhat slow for me, especially
the first time startup or when I open a big file.
Having QuickStarter is not the point, minimizing the startup time is what I
really want.
Anybody know how to make it without QuickStater or upgrading my hardware?
Thanks.

Regards,

If you only do really, really simple things, and now I really mean
SIMPLE things, then perhaps Gnumeric and AbiWord could work for you?

Hi
AbiWord and Gnumeric are very light-weight and quick to start-up.  The earlier suggestion about just leaving LibreOffice open seems about as good as it gets i think.

Maybe try a couple of different versions of java, or better still just turn java off completely and see of that helps?
Tools - Options - Java
and then untick the box at the top.

I seem to remember i once googled and found something to increase start-up speed but i didn't like the look of any of the options in the blogs.  I might feel more comfortable now tho, maybe.

Dear all:
I tried "soffice --quickstart", but Libreoffice still not showed the
quickstarter.
Any suggestion?

What distribution are you using?

QuickStarter was at the origin of a rather nasty bug that prevented
shutting down/logging out as reported in this Ubuntu bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/562027

It's resolved now, but unless you're using LibO 3.5.0 or greater, you
won't have the fix. I can't say if that's the same for other non-Debian
derivatives, though.

What are your reasons for using QuickStarter in GNU/Linux?

If it's only for faster startup speed, remember memory is treated
different than Windows. Even in the slowest environments, once
LibreOffice has loaded once (any component: Writer, Calc, etc), the next
times the startup time improves a lot. You can use a workaround in
Ubuntu to accomplish this for first-time run and get that "oh, it loads
fast" *perception*, specially if you turn off the system often (which
negates the benefits of memory caching during a single session). I may
be oversimplifying a bit here, hoping the point comes across.

See this workaround, should work in other Debian derivatives too:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/562027/comments/120

Other simple optimizations include using RAM as storage, mounting /tmp
in RAM, using SSD storage, etc. - with varying levels of care required
 Don't do this unless you're running LibO 3.5.1 or greater or you may
hit this one too with worse results (data loss):

Regards,

Here are some tweaks that will speed up the start. Please note that you should take down the original numbers before you change these just in case you would like to the return to the original settings:

Open LibreOffice (I use writer for this process). Select Tools -> Options. Select Memory.

Number Of Steps: 20
Use for LibreOffice: 128
Memory Per Object: 20
Number Of Objects: 20

Select Java.
Use a JRE: Checked (Alternately, Uncheck if you do not have Sun Java installed)
Select the radio button of the appropriate Java Engine if needed.

Click OK
Close/Restart LibreOffice which now works quicker.

Hi,

Doing the following made a day night difference for me in how fast LibreOffice opens:

Change hosts setting in hosts file for LibreOffice:
Check computer name in terminal: just enter: hostname in the terminal
In terminal, do gksudo gedit /etc/hosts
Add line as shown below for add, for instance, 127.0.0.1 don localhost don.(none)
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 galaxy
4) and add a line so it looks like this:
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 galaxy
127.0.0.1 galaxy localhost galaxy.(none)
5) save
6) now OpenOffice.org Writer and Calc open fast when the network connection is attached.

For anyone new reading this. replace "galaxy" with whatever you have named your computer.
