Instead of using the History Master extension suggested by Pedro, you can
edit your user profile directly, or use the Tools -> Options -> Advanced:
"Expert Configuration" dialog.

The stanzas are recorded in the org.openoffice.Office.Common.History
preferences

Use the search bar (you land there on opening) search for property
"PickListSize". Default value will be 25. Edit and change to 0.

And at 5.2.0 we've changed the button name on the Advanced panel to "Open
Expert Configuration" and an additional control of "RecentDocsThumbnail",
default will be "true" edit and change to "false"
