Accessing the mailing list

While looking around for alternatives for reading this list, I thought
I saw a page that stated the list could be accessed by a Usenet
newsgroup reader.

But, I've looked at every link in the LO web site, I think, and find
no reference to that. The closest I came is Gmane.

Did I miss something?

Ken

Set up an account in your newsgroup reader for news.gmane.org using port 119

Then subscribe to various LibreOffice and Document Foundation groups.

gmane.comp.documentfoundation.libreoffice.user

See http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/ for list of all mailing lists and their gmane address.

For more information on gmane go to http://gmane.org/

Larry

ALSO READ THE SPECIAL NOTES section at the bottom of the page of http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/ It explains that you must be also subscribed to the LibreOffice mailing list that you want and to use the "no mail" subscription.

Let us know if you have any problems getting on GMane. I use GMane exclusively for LibreOffice. It works really well. All the post are properly ordered and you can browse through all of the past posts.

Cheers

It's been an exercise in frustration, but finally got it done.

If you're interested in what was frustrating, ask here or via email, I'll be
happy to tell you.

Thanks for the help.

One of my cats picks nits out of his fur, so I'm going to do the same, but in
good humor and friendship! LOL

The special notes say:

"Some special-case subscribers might want to be able to post to a list but might
not want to receive messages from that list (community contributors who post
announcements, for instance). In this case, please subscribe to the so-called
"nomail" version of the list by attaching -nomail to the normal subscription
address. For example, to do this for The Document Foundation general discussions
list, the subscription address would be:
discuss+subscribe-nomail@documentfoundation.org."

It is not clear you have to use this option to be able to read the list via a
newsgroup server, and I presume the same is for Gmane. I would suggest to
whomever is in charge a change in the special notes if I was sure how to do
offer the suggestion.

How do I make the change in the email preferences? Unsubscribe my current email
address and then resubscribe adding the "nomail" option?

This reply and the previous one to Larry Gusass is sent from Gmane. Getting
that to work was another exercise in frustration, but eventually figured it out.

Two things I don't like about Gmane's operations is no way to collapse threads
that I've found, and vertical frame size adjustments are not retained, although
that may be a browser problem. As of right now, I've only used Gmane in Firefox
3.6.13 in Mac OS X 10.6.6.

You do not need to subscribe in order to read the list, only in order to post to it.

Unsubscribe your current account an then resubscribe to the nomail version.

I post with my newsreader through Gmane. I do not do anything online at the Gmane site. Setting it up is easy if you are used to setting up newsgroups and using newsreaders.

I don't use Gmane online. I read and post through it using a newsreader (Thunderbird). I do the same for my Gmail accounts. I download the emails and post with Thunderbird rather than doing it online.

But where's the fun in not being able to post?

Unsubscribe your current account an then resubscribe to the nomail version.

I can do that, thanks.

I just tried using a reader for posting this reply, but I could find no way to
make the reply plain text. Even though there was an icon to make it plain text,
it was greyed out in both a reply window and a new message window. And making
the message plain text is not in their help file or on their website.
GRRRRRRRR This is why I have so little respect for software folks who want to
have you use their product, but provide pitiful instructions and help. :frowning:

The other sad thing is, this particular reader was well recommended in an online
forum I checked, yet it doesn't do anything that Outlook Express did 7 years ago.

I sent an email asking how, though.

Thanks again for the help, Larry. I'll go unsubscribe and resubscribe now.

Ken

PS Gmane can't even manage to make lines less than 80 characters long
itself!!!! LOL

Like Larry, I also use Thunderbird as my newsreader. Work really well. Also does mail really nicely.

Nice to see that you are on Gmane finally. Just let us know if you need any more help.

Also does mail really nicely.

I've tried Thunderbird a couple of times since I bought this Mac. There was
something about it I didn't like, but can't remember exactly. It would have
been something to do with email, as this is the first time I've used a newsgroup
reader in seven years. The hiatus was because the ISP stopped offering
newsgroups as part of his offering.

One thing I'm looking for in an email client, which is off topic, is for
outgoing mail filters. The only one's I've found over the years are Outlook,
and the last commercial version of Eudora. So, if you know of an email client
for the Mac that has outgoing filters, I'd like to know of it.

Ken

It doesn't allow mw to sign up for this option. I probably need to do this so that my posts through gmane are cleared automatically:

Final-Recipient: rfc822; discuss%2Bsubscribe-nomail@documentfoundation.org
Original-Recipient: rfc822;discuss%2Bsubscribe-nomail@documentfoundation.org
Action: failed
Status: 5.7.1
Remote-MTA: dns; bilbo.documentfoundation.org
Diagnostic-Code: smtp; 554 5.7.1
     <discuss%2Bsubscribe-nomail@documentfoundation.org>: Relay access denied

Actually, I really like that idea. I do quite a lot of emailing for work and my websites and outgoing filters would be great.

I've left a note on Mozillazine Thunderbird about this. http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=2110799

Cheers

Marc

Hi Paolo:

You need to be subscribed to the mailing list if you want Gmane access. Just use the no mail option. If you are already on the mailist, you will have to unsubscribe and then subscribe back to the no mail option.

Huh???
This thread is not clear.

If I understand your png file, are you talking about a copy of the outgoing mail
being saved in the Sent folder?

If that is what you mean, then that is not what I am looking for.

I want the opposite of incoming mail filters. I want outgoing mail filters that
will place outgoing email into specific folders, not the sent folder.

Ken

Ken,

Sorry I am just tuning t this conversation.

Thunderbird is able to put all mail you send into a folder other than your 'sent' folder. The option is found in the copies and folders section of the account settings dialog.

Once in a distinct folder the filters can be manually run to 'file' them into other folders based on the criteria you set.

I also note that Thunderbird has an add-on called 'Send Filter' that is described as an add-on that "allows you run your message filters automatically on outgoing messages after sending. In other words, it's an outgoing filter for thunderbird and seamonkey."

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/send-filter/

Thunderbird runs on Mac.

I have read the reviews on the addon and they do not look too positive. Even the author of the addon warns people about lost files.

Thunderbird has had a bug-feature request for this since 1999! It is here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11039

You can always join and vote for the feature request or comment.

Cheers

Marc

Marc,

Personally I don't use the addon, I just get my outgoing mail put to a separate directory that I run mail filters on manually.

Hi Simon:

Yes, I have done this too. But the hope is to have this done automatically.

I have added my name to the bug-feature from 1999 and hope that others will too. It shouldn't be a difficult feature to implement as the filter code is already working quite well on all other directories.

Oh well, I guess we can always wait a little longer.

Cheers

Marc
