Avoid destop window

Hi all.

First all, I'm sorry for my poor English.

Well.

I have instructions for a proffesional multiuser instalation for LO Writer
and LO Impress ONLY. Without Calc or Draw or...

Then, I've installed only Writer and Impress. That's ok.

But, when I open some doc or some presentation with LO, and I close it, not
the application, only document, I see the window for desktop of LO (the
attached file).

It's bad for me to see calc or base or draw, dissabled like that.

Can I to avoy that window?

Thanks.

Hi
Which OS;  Windows, Ubuntu, another Gnu&Linux, Bsd or Mac?

I think for most of them you can just click on the "Start" menu (or equivalent) and then something like

"All Programs" - LibreOffice - Writer

When you see "Writer" in that menu you can right-click on it and choose "send to panel" or "Create shortcut on desktop" or "Send to ... - Desktop" and that will give you an icon on your desktop (or panel) that you can just click to get just Writer and not the other ones.

PS don't worry about your English.  It is better than most people near where i live (i live in England).  I cheekily corrected some things but really it was quite easy to understand the way you wrote it.

Hi, Tom.

First, I speak about Windows 7 and Windows 2008 Server, both 64 bits,
LOffice 3.4.

Second, I have not trouble for access directly to one application.

My trouble is only for the window we see when we have only one document
opened and we close the document, not the application.

Is the window attached in prior mail.

Thanks.

Hi Eduardo

This mailing list does not allow attachments but we know what window you are
referring to.
It's this one, right?
http://www.libreoffice.org/features/screenshot/

The problem is that LibreOffice includes all programs in one single file. So
if you un-select some "programs" when you are installing, it just does not
add those shortcuts (or links) to your Start Menu.

This is the way LibreOffice works on any OS. It's not a bug.

(if the answer was not clear feel free to email me in
Portuguese/Spanish/Italian)

Regards,
Pedro

I am afraid I don't see any file attached. Mailing list server strips all mails
of attachments, so if you have added this image as attachment in your mail
program, it won't work. I heard it is possible to add files through Nabble
gateway, but never tried it.

Could you please post that image on some web hosting, such as imageshack.us,
tinypic.com, postimage.org, photobucket.com, flickr.com or similar?

Hi all.

Yes, Pedro, is this screen.

I know this is not a bug.

But it will has any way for avoid... (some xml file for modify, may be...)

I we unselect some program in installation, this program is not refered in
open or new menu. But there are reference here.

For me, it can be... don't know, molesto (spanish) (annuying?)

Hi

Ahhhh, i think i see the problem.  I don't know if it is possible to avoid showing the apps that are not installed.  Sorry this email is not helpful :frowning:

It might be worth talking to the Design Team about developing an
Extension to do that?  or perhaps your organisation could find some
devs to make an Extension to do the job?

Alternatively it might be better just to install the full product as
the entirety of LibreOffice with all the apps in it is likely to be
considerably smaller than the 2 apps.  Also probably only about 10Mb has been saved by not installing the other apps.

If you really need to restrict people to just the 2 apps then AbiWOrd is smaller and lighter-weight than Writer
http://www.abisource.com/
It is highly likely that there is a far better way to make presentations than either PowerPoint or Impress.

I understand your idea (yes annoying is the perfect word  ). I think that
it would make a lot of sense to have an alternate working mode where closing
a document would keep the programs interface instead of showing the Start
Center. And in that mode, the New button would allow to create only
documents that apply to that program. E.g.

I agree that having too many options is sometimes difficult to explain to
the users.

I think this really deserves a Feature Request. Would you like to do that,
Eduardo?

Meanwhile, does any one on this mailing list know of a quick hack to modify
the Start Center?

Pedro

I think the point is that the users will get confused with too many options.
I agree that for a beginner (or someone transitioning from another program)
it might be confusing.

It would really be nice if LO offered an alternative interface to allow new
users to get acquainted to the programs they are used to and eventually
"switch" to the whole suite (even though it was there all the time)

Abiword is nice and light but it is not on the same league as Writer
(depending on the user requirements, obv) but to my knowledge there is no
standalone Open Source presentation program available.

The nearest you can get is a standalone Freeware

Thank you very much to all.

Tom, in my organization we utilise abiwod maybe 10 years in linux, but the
trigger for this installation of OOo ó LO is to see/modify presentations
from another suite :-P, and I have not see any compatibility like OOo/LO.

I will write some enhancement request, like Pedro say, but it will arrive
late for me. Well, the world is not perfect.

Hi
If you can get people keen on the topic then feature requests don't always take years!

Choice can be confusing.  If you tell people not to use certain options then they are likely to  be even more determined to "accidentally" try them out.  That might make them more productive as they find good uses for the other apps.

The Design Team Mailing List might be a good one to ask about your issue.  So, i have tried forwarding this thread to their list but i am not subscribed there so i wont see any answers :frowning:

There is no text processor program. This is one huge program to open text, spreadsheets, presentations, vector graphics, embeddable formula objects and database frontends.
If you do not install all the components you will run into trouble, sooner or later.
If your users are really that dumb you should definitively not install this productivity suite. There are free Microsoft viewers for their presentations and text processor documents. They also provide versions of PowerPoint and WinWord without license fee but with user interfaces for alleged dumb users.
