Base odb Forms are read only

Hello,
it may have been answered earlier but this is my first mail to the list
and i am having a little problem with an odb, so thank you for your answers!

I am on an Ubuntu 10.10 and my LibreOffice version is 3.3.2-19.

The problem that i am having is that whichever form i try to open is
"read only" and so i can not save any kind of data.
On the contrary, i can enter data through the tables manually and save
without problem.

I have also tried creating a new base for testing but i am having the
same issue.
The same thing happens on an other pc with Ubuntu 11.04.
Is anyone else having the same problem?

thank you!

thank you! :)Hi,Have you actually tried to enter any data on the form? Forms say
"Read only" in the title bar, because you cannot edit the form, but
you can enter and edit data.I haven't had any problems using LO on Ubuntu. If you have Open Office installed it can interfere with LO also. I
did have problems with some forms, but that all disappeared when I
    removed OO.Hope that helps.--
God bless you

Thanks for the quick reply. I have removed the OO before installing
Libre, following the ubuntu wiki so i guess that i have done it in the
right way.
Generally i have not encountered any kind of issue with Libre so far but
i guess sometimes the title bar can be misleading!

I have just tried entering some test data in a form and it...seems to
work but there are some issues.
1)There is no bottom panel like it was in OO when you entered data in a form
2)The "Save" button, from File->Save is grey and you can not directly save
3)The only way to save what you have typed is to click the [X]-top-close
button or File->Close and then it asks if you want to save the data.
If you click yes it... then saves as it should.

So somewhere there is a problem... and could it be a bug?
I am having the same thing in different pc's and with new files...

I'd rather not... but thanks anyway.

Hi Mixalis,

So somewhere there is a problem... and could it be a bug?
I am having the same thing in different pc's and with new files...

This sounds like one of the known bugs with the Ubuntu packaged version
of LibreOffice - the form navigation toolbar is missing. Judging by the
number of times it comes up, here, and on other lists, I guess the
Ubuntu packagers still haven't got around to fixing it.

The problem does not occur in the LibreOffice debs provided for download
via the LibreOffice website. If you want to install these debs, then you
need to remove the Ubuntu provided packages from your system first.
There is/was a page on the LibreOffice website which explained how to
install the debs and get desktop integration. It has even been explained
here on this list in other discussions, if you search in the archives of
the list. Otherwise you have to start LibO from the command line because
the debs install into /opt.

Hello!

Maybe at 3 am is not the best time to look for such things, so
eventually the problem is quite different.

After some tests I realized that indeed there is no problem in data
entry, but in the disappearance of ALL the toolbars
etc (not just the navigation toolbar). In this way, I was a victim of an
optical illusion because what
I see is a "locked" window with a title "read only"!

The real bug is the problem with the panels/toolbars. All of them are
disabled and
even if you click to show one and then close and reopen the window, it
will havedisappeared again!

Probably as reported there is a problem with the packages from the
Ubuntu PPA.
I guess the first link of NoOp is the right one.

Thank you for your help!

Fixed in 3.4:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=36684
You might want to point that out in:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+bug/709778
as Ubuntu is still on 3.3.2:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice

You can download the 3.4 pre-release here & test as a .deb install:

Hi,

2)The "Save" button, from File->Save is grey and you can not directly save

Not using the Ubuntu version, I can't comment on this but just bring my two cents here: in the RDBMS world, there's not data "save" per se. IOW, the data are saved whenever the cursor leaves the current record to move to another.

Yes, just type in the new data and move on to the next cell. The data gets sent
straight to the data-source without any need to save. The save button is for
when you add or change forms, reports, queries or tables, it's not needed for
the data.

Yes, but as we all (or at least any of us who have worked with Base in
the past) know, depending on the database backend being used with LibO,
data isn't necessarily committed until you press that "save" button

Maybe it is possible to consider to write less, to the point, and only when you are pretty sure about the subject.

Yes, we all know that... unless we forget it...

Thanks for the reminder, I stand corrected!

Hi

It's the way a lot of database programs work (Sage, most address-books, MS
Access etc) and it's one of the most frequently asked questions when people are
new to databases so it's a surprise that Base is different.

The original question still hasn't been answered, i think. The question was
something about, why the save button was greyed-out after entering data, or how
to deal with it when it's like that.

Hi Tom,

something about, why the save button was greyed-out after entering data, or how
to deal with it when it's like that.

Well I think I said that the problem experienced by the user was due to
the fact that they were using Ubuntu LibreOffice packages and those
packages have that known problem that (1) toolbars are not displayed
correctly and (2) this cause Base to appear not to accept data entry in
forms.

So the solution is to use the official LibreOffice downloads, or try and
get Ubuntu to release a fixed, updated set of packages.

Alex

Just as an update to the invisible toolbars issue, I thought I would
mention that a bug report in relation thereto has had its priority upped
to blocker for the 3.4 release by one of the Ubuntu developers.
Apparently, the problem is not just within the Ubuntu LibreOffice
packages, but indeed more widespread.

Here's hoping it gets fixed for 3.4 !!!
