so if I'm navigating to e.g. a save as... folder the rightmost folder
name shows up as a set of little boxes rather than characters. Mint 18.3
Mate desktop. Anyone else see this?

Otherwise a fine release works well and quickly.

A little box generally means that the font in use does not have a glyph
to display for that codepoint. So check what font is in use and in
particular that it does have the appropriate character.
