Calc - Merge cells

I searched for an answer at
http://www.mail-archive.com/users@libreoffice.org/

-- is that the correct place to search the archives of this list?

My problem: In Calc, I frequently merge and unmerge (split) cells. In
OO.org I was able to assign a key combo to one of the two 'Format -
Merge' entries. (Don't know why there were two, but there were two
going back several versions.) The one I really, really, really liked,
and assigned to a key combo would merge selected cells AND unmerge
(split) previously merged cells with the same key combo. I tried
setting it up in LibreOffice, but it only merges. It doesn't unmerge
(split).

Am I missing something? Is there a solution? If not, can it be fixed?

TIA

Are you sure you did not assign a macro to this key?

If not, can you write what keys you used in OO to do this?

I use Ctrl-G to 'group' (merge) cells. It works to merge cells, but
not to unmerge (split) them as it did in OO.o

Unbelievable news from Egypt!

We work hard to help people, organisations, government departments and others
communicate and give a new choice to help them do that. Many of us live fairly
comfortably in countries that at least pay "lip-service" to the notion of
"Freedom of Speech". Many of us see the struggle against proprietary formats
and programs as part of pushing at the boundaries of our current freedoms.

Try pinging an Egyptian server today and you apparently get no response. From
12:34 am today the Egyptian government switched off the internet into or out of
the country. Some but not many satellite communications and some proxy servers
are keeping a few things open. Sms is down, twitter is down, facebook is down
while outside Egypt we hardly notice any of it.

Lets hope more lives are not lost there!

Did you try to use 'merge and center cells', this will unmerge the
cells, but the stay centered.... ;(

OO had indeed two options named 'Merge cells'.
LO has and option 'Merge cells', and an option 'Merge and Center cells'

Or you could do this:
assign 'CTRL+G' to 'Merge Cells'
and 'CTRL+SHIFT+G' to 'Merge and Center Cells'

Ctrl+G will merge them (wihout center)
Ctrl+Shift+G will unmerge them

Downside is tha pushing Ctrl+Shift+G at the wrong time, cells get
centered......

Sorry for them. I hope people get what they want.
And I wish one day every nation have a great goverment.
And Tom, I appreciate English people like you because you know what's going on in the world.
Maybe it's the English culture, I don't know. You live in uk, don't you?

While some battle for open programs and formats, many south africans
use pirated software and dont know there are alternatives. i install
open source alternatives for my students, but with the problems i am
having with libre office i cannot reccomend it. it is more than ten
times slower than open office 3.2.1

I would say stick with OOo 3.2 for a bit longer then. These are early days for
the first release and we have almost all experienced rapid improvements in the
first few days of many other projects.

Software piracy is rife everywhere.

'Slightly' larger issues are going on in Eygpt and elsewhere right now

Thank you  I am not in Egypt so i am not certain what is happening there or
how truthful the many articles are. I do hope no more people get hurt but i
also hope under-laying problems get resolved for the people. I hope anyone's
friends and family there stay safe. I hope my friends there stay safe but i am
wary about trying to contact them in case that causes trouble.

I too will be sticking to OOo for a bit.

The troubles in Egypt and elsewhere are perfectly topical, because it's important to find ways of getting modern IT facilities to people who can't always afford to pay much. The same is true in richer countries if like me you're retired. Open source is also a matter of principle.

As I have explained elsewhere, I think office suites have a future. The difficulty with OOo and libreoffice, and open source in general, is that there are too many little bugs (and difficulties with geek-type workarounds) for the approach to be viable for numerous individual users, each of whom has particular requirements. To illustrate, it would be best to give a specific example: the graph (chart) function of the OOo spreadsheet. Here, the core software appears to be powerful and innovative, but I never seem to be able to find the controls I need (for example to create 2 x or y axes). Worse, it doesn't seem possible draw a histogram with an independent variable (a very common requirement).

I guess this reflects a lack of development resources; in rich countries we need to find a way of lobbying politicians responsible for "foreign aid" priorities.
