Can't install LibreOffice

I have downloaded LibO_3.5.0_Win_x86_install_multi(2).msi, but installation fails.

After I give User Account Control permission to install, the Install Wizard opens, showing a progress bar, and saying installation may take several minutes. The progress bar remains blank, and a dialog box opens, saying "Please exit LibreOffice 3.5 and the LibreOffice Quickstarter before you continue...."

As LibreOffice is not yet installed, I am at a loss to know how to proceed. If I simply wait, nothing happens; if I close the dialog box, the Install Wizard quits, saying my installation has not been changed.

Help, please!

(I am running Vista Home Premium, and I have Open Office installed, in case this gives a clue.)

Hi
Where the error message says "LibreOffice" just replace the with "OpenOffice".  They are still extremely similar even tho LibreOffice is far more developed.  If you want to keep OpenOffice on your system then this guide might help
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Installing_in_parallel

You can turn off the OpenOffice quick-starter by opening OpenOffice and go to
Tools - Options - Memory
Then untick the relevant option at the bottom of that screen.  I'm not sure if you have to reboot the machine at that point to make it take effect.  You have to have OpenOffice closed to install LibreOffice at all.  It's best to use the guide i just linked to so that you have both on your system so that you can go bck to the old one if LO is not quite right.  Actually the 3.5.0 has been a bit problematic so it might be worth finding the 3.4.5 instead.  The 3.5.1 should fix most of the problems.

I don't have OpenOffice installed and I am getting the exact same downloading problem.  I currently have only LO 3.4 installed.

If you have LO 3.4 installed on Windows, you have a Quickstarter in
the system tray next to the computer clock. You need to exit it before
installing LO or OOo.

Sorry, but the system tray doesn't show a Quickstarter to exit!

Hi
Have you tried Revo-uninstaller?
http://www.revouninstaller.com/
A few people in here months ago tried it and said it was really good but i have never tried it myself.  It sounds as tho you have some remnants of OpenOffice, NeoOffice, Go-oo, LibreOffice, perhaps Lotus Symphony lurking somewhere on your system.

Before trying LibreOffice what Office Suites did you have or try?

Tom

Thanks for the suggestion; I'll give it a try.  If anything, there may be a remnant of OO from my last computer because I transferred my files to the new one via a thumb drive.  I sure hope that LO is going to fix this glitch in the next update.

I tried your suggestion; however the program didn't find any traces of OO, and LO still won't install.

Hi
Were you using a word-processor before trying LibreOffice?  Any office suite at all?  There are quite a few that are all based on the same code.  LibreOffice has recombined with at least one.  OpenOffice is hopefully going to recombine with another.

Not on this computer.  And, as I previously mentioned, I can't find any OO remnants on my system.

Hi Frank,

I have exactly the same problem, although using windows 7. i also have Open
Office. Any replies yet?

George

Hi
If this problem occurs then it's usually easy to fix by un-installing OpenOffice or previous versions of LibreOffice.  There are some other Office Suites that are also based on the OpenOffice code but they are much rarer, for example IBM's Lotus Symphony.

There is a guide to have multiple versions of the code-base running at the same time on the same machine.  This guide specifically talks about previous versions of LibreOffice but can be adapted for other Office Suites such as OpenOffice
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Installing_in_parallel

Judy seems to be having a unique problem so it might be worth her writing a bug-report about it.  Either of these guides might help her do that
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport
https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/bug/
She has apparently already tried using 3rd party tools such as
http://www.revouninstaller.com/
top make sure there are no previous versions of the code-base on her machine.  She has also tried previous releases of LibreOffice such as the much more stable 3.4.5 instead of the 3.5.0 which people sometimes have weird problems with.  The 3.5.0 is the first in it's branch and the 3.5.1 is the equivalent of the release with the first "Service pack" so it should be a lot better.

Franks has not made any posts since his initial question so he has either fixed it or given up or just ignoring the lists responses for some reason.  So, you are unlikely to get a response from him.  Always worth a try tho!

I am experiencing an identical problem. This is a first-time install for any
version of LO, and nobody here has ever used OpenOffice.

----- Duplication of Frank Bonar's bug

LO3.5 installs without any problems on my home mchine. I am trying to
install LO3.5 on my work machine.

I'm runnig Windows XP Pro SP3 at work.

Messages will be translated from Brazilian Portuguese to English.

I get to the "Installing LibreOffice 3.5" windows with the white status bar
and click "Next".

I then get a dialog saying: "Please exit LibreOffice 3.5 and the LibreOffice
Quickstarter before you continue. If you are using a mutli-user system, make
certain that there are no other users with LibreOffice 3.5 open."

I click "OK" and the program exits.

Grasping at straws. I use Avira Free at home and Avast Free at work. Frank,
what do you use?

On Windows you may have the quickstarter for an old version open unintentionally. If you do not see it you can try closing it by CTRL-ALT-DEL to open the Task Manager and closing in programs or tasks (I am not sure which) soffice.exe. Or if you have an older version of OOo of LO installed, uninstall it.

Hi
Have you been able to try the 3.4.5 instead?
http://www.libreoffice.org/download/?type=win-x86&lang=pt-BR&version=3.4.5
The 3.5.0 seems to be causing trouble for other people too but the 3.4.5 should be fine.

Did you have any type of Office Suite on the machine before?  Please let us know which one.
Good luck and regards from
Tom

3.5.0 is the "cutting edge" version of LO.
I would try 3.4.5, since that is the most stable and is the "business/enterprise ready" version.

I had little issues installing 3.4.4 and 3.4.5 on XP, Vista, or Win 7 systems. I run 3.4.5 on Ubuntu as my default system.

So it might be best to go with 3.4.5 instead of 3.5.0 for the time being.

Looks like you've run into these:

But i get this problem with a virgin install - never OO and first time for
LO.

I tried 3.4.5 and got the same problem.

Hi
Have you had any other Office Suites?  Have you tried RevoUninstaller?
http://www.revouninstaller.com/

The guide for installing a parallel version of LibreOffice might help, even tho you are certain you don't have one currently
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Installing_in_parallel
Even tho you don't think you have a version of OOo or LO it sounds as tho your machine is fairly convinced you do do it might be best to play along as though it's right even if it's blatantly wrong.
