Hi,
I would like to subscribe to the list, but can't manage after several attempts
writing to users+subscribe@libreoffice.org as specified here:

Any hint?
Lorenzo.

Given that this appeared on the list, I'd say you have subscribed successfully.
The problem I had is that when I click on the link the resulting destination address in Thunderbird is: users%2Bsubscribe@libreoffice.org
and that doesn't work. When I manually changed the address back to users+subscribe... then my subscription went through.
I think the address, and other addresses, are wrongly encoded on the page http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/
That's actually not a given -- unsubscribed posting is allowed, and there is no header for filtering by "Delivered-To: moderator" as for the OOo lists. Only the moderator knows the poster is not subscribed. Hopefully the moderators are giving people the information to follow the conversation and, if appropriate, reply to messages in the thread.
There is a header "Archived-At" that supplies a link into the official archive. Unfortunately, there are still some glitches with using that:
* The OP would need to see the message to get the header. Since by definition that is not
happening for an unsubscribed poster, the link would have to be sent to the OP directly by
somebody who (1) gets the message on the list, and (2) knows the user is unsubscribed. So --
who can do this, and when?
* If the OP gets the link, follows the thread, and uses the Reply button, the private address of
the respondent and not the list address is set up in the generated e-mail; this needs to be
replaced with the list address.
* The OP is still not subscribed, so this message also will be moderated, and therefore there
will be a delay before the list gets it. I don't know what the average lag time is here, this
may not be significant if there are enough moderators.
Nabble and Gmane archives both deal well with the second and third issues, but the first remains; somebody has to get the appropriate link, or instructions for finding it, to the OP.
Since it works just fine for myself and everyone else that has commented... maybe the problem is more 'local'... ?

Hi
"Everyone that has commented" does not include people that found it tooo
difficult to join the list. One person persevered and even asked the list for
help rather than just giving up. Perhaps there is a problem but you will never
know it if you don't listen and explore. I also had trouble but found a
work-around.

OK, Tom, don't keep us in suspense -- what problem did you have, and what was the workaround?

I don't know Tom's problem, but I had the same problem as started this
thread. Clicking on the email address to send the request somehow didn't
pickup the "users+" so it didn't go through. After not getting the expected
automated response I looked at the email and noticed the missing part.
Correcting the address and resending resulted in the subscription going
through normally. Something, maybe with the clip board or with certain
mailers and how they handle the clip board or something causes it to not
always work as intended.
Not so. I moderated Mr Sutton's post.

Dear all,
Thanks for the many responses. The various messages (especially the ones on
encoding etc.) gave me a hint on how I might try and workaround the issue and I
am now happily subscribed although I am not 100% sure what the exact problem
was. I guess I should have suspected that it was more of a 'it's only me'
problem as google wasn't helping much.
First off, I should have specified in my first message that I was using the
gmane interface to post my initial request *because* I am not subscribed.
I was simply copying the email address from firefox into thunderbird (i.e.
manually not using the mailto: link) and sending it using my ISP's smtp. The
address was the correct one.
I eventually managed to subscribe by sending the email and replying to the
confirmation one from the ISP's webmail interface.
It doesn't seem to be a thunderbird isssue though, because I tested with
another account which lives in the same thunderbird profile using the same
procedure and everything work.
My suspect is there's 'something' (TM) going on on the ISP smtp but this is
really hard to know, as their customer care is terrible and they even closed
down the support forums.
Anyway, all's well that ends well... hopefully
Lorenzo
Most likely a client specific problem, but that cannot be determined if
people reporting problems don't provide the bare minimum of detail
(problem description, platform, specific app name/version (if
necessary), etc) needed to debug an issue like this...
Is there not a way for moderators to add some kind of 'moderated post'
header or body tag to these kinds of messages? If not, there should be,
otherwise how is anyone to know?
Of course, I disagree with allowing non-member postings, but that's just
me...
Agree. Something along the lines of:
[Moderated] <subject>
...
If these lists work like the OOo ones, the *only* thing moderators have the capability to do is either reject the message or allow it to go to the list. They can't affect the subject or content of the message at all. Maybe one of the moderators will confirm that this is true for these lists, too.
Unfortunately not yet, but I believe it will come. All we can do for now is to allow - or not, of course - a message to be posted. Plus, if we see that someone is making a mistake, such as one person who was sending a message to users@... with subject subscribe (a common way to get subscribed as all will know) we can email the person with the correct method. But in this case it seemed more appropriate to let the posters message pass so that he would get help from the team, than to try and solve his problem myself.

Well, I reckon the only way to find out is on:
moderators@documentfoundation.org: Discussions list for our mailing list
moderators.
http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/
Fortunately, James is following this list, too, and replied with a confirmation elsewhere in the thread (but hopes this ability may come later). I don't dare join another list here -- I'm getting totally swamped already!
There was a header added that list members could filter on (and look at
if they wanted) to tell which ones were moderated and which ones
weren't. My understanding is these lists don't add that header.
Right, there is no such header. The Archived-At header was added, perhaps intending to help with following the discussion through the archives, but I talked about why this doesn't really work in an earlier note on this thread.
