Column counter in Writer

Is there any way to make Writer display the number of characters in the
current line like MS Word does?

and i'm not sure how helpful they might be;

not necessarily about per line;

I haven't poked around the settings those 2 links suggest.

which version do you use? At least since 4.2.4 you find this information in the status bar.
