copy cell formatting in Calc

In Calc I select a certain range of cells / rows / columns. Select "copy" and then paste that selection into an empty space or even a new spreadsheet. HOWEVER, the cell formatting is never maintained!

I think the properties that Calc considers cell formatting *are* maintained by default, in fact.

I mean (specifically) the width and height of rows and columns is ALWAYS what presumably is the "default" value.

The problem here is that row heights and column widths are not the property of individual cells but of complete rows and columns, of course. If the row heights and column widths of an arbitrary block of cells were to be copied to an arbitrary destination, the effect would be to change the heights and widths of other, entirely unconnected cells - all the remaining cells in the rows and columns concerned. In general, that would surely be unwelcome?

If you copy an entire row or block of rows, the row heights will be carried over to the destination - and similarly for columns and column widths. If you paste into the same sheet, the other property will already be correct, but if you copy into a different sheet, this will not be carried over, no doubt for the same reason.

I tried to use "paste special", indicating ONLY text and/or format, but that does not change anything.

Paste Special can helpfully be used to suppress the default modification of row heights and column widths when pasting entire rows or columns, in fact.
