copy from libreoffice writer to clipboard is partial

I am using a debian packaged
Version: 5.0.5.1
Build ID: 00m0(Build:1)
Locale: en-US (en_US.UTF-8)

of libreoffice and when I want to copy from a writer document, the results are partial.

Pasting into the vim text editor, or into the mate terminal app gives a partial amount,
randomly from 3 to 200 characters in several tests.

Any idea what part of my debian linux install could be causing that?
