corrupted characters in Ubuntu

Hi All,

this one has been hanging around linuxquestions for a couple of weeks now with no resolution as yet.

    http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/ubuntu-63/libreoffice-in-ubuntu-14-04-lts-corrupted-characters-4175525313/

I know there are a few Ubuntu users around here so someone may be able to make a suggestion. I have a feeling this problem is as much an operating system thing as LO. David's problem is:

However, the problem that I have is only since I updated from Ubuntu
    12.04
When I use the Calc sheet, corrupt characters appear in the "font
name", "font size", "input line", " name box", "column letters",
"row numbers" & "sheet name" - This is not all the time, but more
    often than not.
I have noticed that the "background colour box" always is yellow, so
that the corrupted characters have a yellow striped background. When
I change the background colour to white and close the document, when
    I reopen the doc the
"background colour box" is back to yellow!

And there is a bit more detail in the post plus a few suggestions (unsuccessful).

Any thoughts pls let me know. Or if you have a LQ account feel free to pitch in

Cheers

Hi
Good call. I like the link making it easier for us to see the thread
there.

I suspect they have installed a language-pack for a different language and
that they don't have a decent font for that language. So i think if they
go to;

Tools - Options - "Language Settings" - Languages

and then reset the language in the top box to the one they have as their
locale. I sometimes have to go back into English (Uk) as a stepping stone
before getting the right language.
