Default Superscript and Subscript size

Dear all,

Just wondering if someone could help me with this. I have posted a question in the openoffice forums, but I wasn't able to get any help, and someone advised me to maybe report a bug.

Basically, I am trying to change the default size of the superscript and subscript to make them larger than 58% which is the default. I have tried to change them by modifying the setting under styles and formatting 'Position' tab. I change the size and uncheck the 'Automatic' box for both superscript and subscript, but as soon as I close the window, the changes do not take effect and then when I reopen the Position tab, the Automatic boxes are checked again.

Of note, I can change the size if I highlight the relevant section and then change it via the Format -> Character setting, however, I do not want to have to do this every time. I am using LibreOffice version 4.0.3.3 in Ubuntu 12.04.

Hi.
To have the settings (changes) you make stay for a new document you may need to make these changes to the default style and then save the document as a template and make it your default.
This is the first thing I do as I do not like the default font and margins.

I have put a fair bit of description of the issue there, but let me know if I can give any more information. I have tried to save the changes as a template and then save it and make it default, but it didn't change anything unfortunately. I think the main problem is that the Automatic box gets checked again as soon as I close the window. It's not a problem that arises when starting a new document but as soon as I try to make the changes.

I know that this is a small issue, but it would be great to solve it as the size of 58% just looks ridiculous :-\

Hi.
I have Default showing as my style (dropdown above and to left of the typing area), just typed some letters on a page, right clicked, Edit Paragraph Style....
There I change the superscript and subscript values to say 40%. I apply and exit.
If I exit LO and then start a new document the superscript and subscript are still 40%.
This is in LO3.6 and 4.1. The automatic box is ticked.

Does this describe what you are wanting to do.

Actually none of these things are happening Tom. The only way that I can get what I want is by selecting every instance individually which is just impractical.

Steve, I can do exactly the same as well but once the changes are selected there is no difference at all when I start typing. I select my desired size and click Apply, then when I reopen the document... the changes are still there. However, when I press Ctrl-Shift-P to get superscript (or Ctrl-Shift-B for subscript) the size is back to 58%. As I said before, I can change it after I have typed it by selecting it and then going to Format -> Character and changing it to 70%. I just cannot find a way so that whenever I toggle super/sub-script on... I get the desired size. I've followed the directions in the writer guide, and this seems to me to be intuitively what should be done... but no effect takes place. That's why I thought it could be a bug.

Given the answers in the thread at AOO i suspect it is a bug.

Here is a guide to help post a bug-report.  Don't take it all too seriously.  They ask for a lot but if it's not easy to give all that straight away just post anyway.  Later on you can add comments so you can get all the required information together in the report in a few posts at your own pace.  It might be that they are able to help without even having all the info straight away anyway.

If this list does solve the problem you can always close the report and let people know how and that might help those people over at AOO too.

Just out of curiosity do you have any of the general information, such as username and stuff 'filled in'?  There was something that only worked if you had at least 1 or 2 characters, even empty spaces in there.  Aaargh, i'm at a Windows machine that doesn't have LibreOffice or even OpenOffice, yet.  I might have to make sure i get the portable version worked out in case i'm ever here again!

No worries about the duplicates to me.  Pressing Delete 3 times instead of 2 is pretty easy for me.

There is some weird bug that means a certain setting keeps getting forgotten when there is nothing in
File - Properties - Descriptions
but you don't need to fill it in substantially.  Even just a word per section is more than enough.  I don't think that is likely to be the problem because someone else would have picked it up by now.  So, i think starting a bug-report would be a good plan.

Is this the same "bug" that prevents things from working when the Tools -> Options -> LibreOffice -> User Data section is not filled in? As a retired Electronic/Software engineer, I think that bug is silly and sounds deliberate - especially since it has been known and not fixed for a long time. But that may just be my paranoia showing.

Ahhh, that's where it is.  It's never made any kind of sense to me either.

Tools - Options - LibreOffice - User Data
 is the right place, i think.  Still, it doesn't need all field to be filled in apparently and even just any 1 field with about 1 word is plenty.

I do not find in the "Tools" menu options any place that defines the subscript and superscript sizes. I know where to change the size from the 58% to 50% or other size, but not where that default size is stored and can be save for the next time.

I believe [but never done this] you could set the size and save it "someway" as the default document. If that works, it may allow you to set the character size of the "scripts" to whatever works for your needs. Or you could save a page, with the size change[s], as a template and us it that way. But I never changed the default document or made template that actually show up when I save as template and then try to open a new document from the templates. The paths shown in "Tools > Options > LibreOffice > Paths" shows the "save as template" file locations in the "hidden" dot config folder system, which LO does not show the proper config template folder in the "Open > Template" options.

Maybe you can create another path for your saved templates, but right now, it does not work. I think it is a bug in the 4.0.x system though.

So has someone made the bug report?

Any good and easy work around?

Saving a document as a .ott file and placing it into a personal or business template folder withing you standard "My Documents" type of folder for Windows, or in Linux a "/home/"user"/Documents/LibreOffice/business/templates/" type of folder.

It would be nice to be able to make the change to the superscript size and then it will reflect that change when you do another manual or "automatic" script set of characters. like - 1^st , or 2^nd , H_2 O
[the "st" and the "nd" should shown as superscripted and the "2" in H2O should be subscripted]

I have not read this entire thread, so forgive me if I'm repeating others or writing something that doesn't quite fit.

I've found that I can change the size of superscripts by changing their attribute in the Superscript character style.

The problem I've found (which may be the same as y'all) is that selecting the superscript toolbar button doesn't apply my newly changed superscript size. The program says that it's applying the superscript character style, but it's not applying my customized size attribute.

So, instead of applying superscripts through the toolbar button, I apply them by selecting the character style. I get what I want, but it's not a very intuitive way of getting there.

Hi all,

Late reply, been finishing off something - but I can get back to thinking about superscripts again! Yes Virgil, I think we've got a similar problem... I can change the size of individual cases, but there is no way I have found that I can just set the new size once, and then all others follow suit from then on. I have tried to fill in all of my details in the way that was mentioned earlier, but to no avail. Therefore I will submit it as a bug. I've never done that before - I'm guessing it's pretty intuitive... am I right?

I really wish I had the skills to fix this myself, after all, that's one of the benefits of having access to the source code isn't it! One day maybe...

helps.  It does ask for a lot more detail than you might be able to give in your initial report but you can always add that detail later in further posts to the thread of the report.  It's much the same as writing an email to this list tbh.
