Documents won't open on network shared folder by double click

Version: 3.3.2 Italian
OS: WindowsXp SP3

If I try to open a document on a shared folder, i.e.
"\\otherpc\blabla\mydocument.doc", by double click I see the Libreoffice
logo appears for few seconds, then nothing.

If I try to open the same document by menu -> file -> open -> network.... it
works.

This is the file association for a *.doc in my registry:

"C:\Programmi\LibreOffice 3\program\\swriter.exe" -o "%1"

Can anyone help me?

I gave this a try with the DEB 64-bit version [English]

I first went from a Ubuntu 10.04 LTS [64-bit] machine to a shared folder on a Windows Vista [32-bit] laptop.

I double-clicked an .odt files and opened it into LibreOffice. It worked.

Then I used the Open option in LibreOffice and when to that same shared drive [needed a user and password to get access to the folder] and opened the same document. That worked as well.

I then went from the Vista Laptop to a shared folder on the Ubuntu desktop. It worked fine.

So my question is why it did not open by the double-click method when it opened from LibreOffice. It should have work either way. Have you tried it on other files?

My Vista version of LibreOffice is 3.3.1 [tag libreoffice 3.3.1.2]

Thank you very much for your response.

As you suggested, I've tried with other files. Until now I've done many try
only with other *.doc files, that are what I mainly use, with same result.

With *.xls, *.odg, *.odt LibreOffice works fine. So I think this, with *.doc
files, is definitely a my problem (registry?).

Thank you again.
Enrico

Can you also edit the document via double-click and save it back to the
SMB share ? AFAIK this has been a longstanding problem on Ubuntu.

Alex

I've found the issue:

I've a file server where users work. I mirror the work directory on my pc
with same structure, i.e.:

the server path is
"\\server\data\folder_01\document.doc"

and on my pc I have mirrored, every night
"c:\data\folder_01\document.doc"

So if I load "\\server\data\folder_01\document.doc", the process
"soffice.bin" first search for "c:\data\folder_01\document.doc" then for
"\\server\data\folder_01\document.doc" (the right one). If the local search
fails, the network files is loaded correctly, but if local file exists the
process exits.

I've found this issue using sysinternals process monitor.

Interesting. I had this same problem for a while on Max OSX 10.5 and NeoOffice. Could not be open by double-click, with the same basic symptoms you describe, but could be opened directly through the Open Dialog. I believe I solved this be removing and reinstalling.

I was an OpenOffice user without this problem, then I installed LibreOffice
and I found it. So I uninstalled first Openoffice, then Libreoffice and
again I have installed Libreoffice (more and more times) without solving. I
could try to come back to Openoffice to verify if it has the same problem
now.

Hi
Have you tried different releases of LibreOffice? Did you try one of the stable
releases such as 3.3.2 or 3.3.1? Does OpenOffice have the same problem? Which
release?
Regards from
Tom

I've tried:

http://download.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/stable/3.3.2/win/x86/

- LibO_3.3.2_Win_x86_install_multi.exe
- BrOffice_3.3.2_Win_x86_install_all_lang.exe

Both have same behaviour.

Enrico

It may not be an application problem. When I had this problem, it was specific to certain document types, but eventually I found that it was not directly related to NeoOffice. It appears to have something to do with interpreting paths within the OS and/or identifying file types. That is, it was the manner in which the OS was passing the file to the app that was "broken."

Can you open these documents with the File...Open command? I could. I just couldn't open by double-click from shared storage. Can you open with Word or WordPad or other document editor? Does the extension and type matter? In other words, is it only ".doc" format files or does this effect ".xls" and other file types?

Cheers,

Hi
Ouch, the stable ones should work.

On Ubuntu 10.04 i just tried opening two files across the Windows Network. The
one that i copied onto the file-share over the network opened fine but the other
one only opened as read-only. I might try out some experimenting tomorrow but i
don't know anything about networking.
Good luck and regards from
Tom

I've tried OpenOffice freshly downloaded. Same issue.
I've tried to associate *.doc files to Scite and MSWordpad and they work
fine.

Same issue on *.ods and *.xls.

However another pc on the same lan with OO3.2.0 installed and local
mirroring works fine.

I think I have a problem on my pc.

Hi

Ok, i still don't know anything about network configurations. I think it could
just be permissions for the server-user-name? When you login to the local
desktop machine it then has to login to the network. If you have different
users on the local desktop then they could all be given the same or different
logins to the file-server. Somehow i think your desktop's user has been given a
'wrong' file-server login.

Can you copy files over the network onto your machine, edit and then save them
back across the network?

Does your desktop machine have at least 15Gb free and would you like someone to
guide you through installing Ubuntu as a dual-boot alongside your existing
Windows? I would be happy to help anyone with that.

Tom

Hi,

I reverted to OpenOffice 3.2 and I resolved the issue.

My user has full control on that shared folder. No known issue on
permission/access working on that folder for the last 5-6 years...

Known action before issue: I upgraded from oo3.2 to libre3.3 without
uninstall oo3.2.

Now I think this is a bug of these release.

Problem: LibreOffice and OpenOffice 3.3 on WinXpsp3 does not load
"\\server\myfolder\document.ext" if "c:\myfolder\document.ext" exists.

Regards
Enrico
