Downloading the new LO

Hi All

A friend of mine has just got herself a new HP computer (Desktop). Rather nice!! And - naturally it came with Windows-7 installed as well as a "trial" version of MS Office.

She asked me to set it all up for her but that she did NOT want to use MSOffice and would I later, (maybe in January), consider changing it over to Linux for her. This I agreed to and suggested I get her the latest LO Suite so she can do her immediate work AND still be able to take it back to School, (she's a Teacher), for them to use there as well, (the School is on MS Office!!).

So off I went to download the latest LO for Windows - - - - - Can't find it!!! All I find is some strange BitTorrent thing which I'm NOT interested in, don't know about, can't understand the info on their pages and, with out Bandwidth problems here in SA, don't want anything to do with!!

*SO* - Bottom line.... Where can I find a plain old .exe installer for LO 3.6.3?

*PS* - I'm also wanting to upgrade my PCLinuxOS version as well - so where are the plain rpm files for this??

Thanks for any help.

Hi Ian,

You can download at http://www.libreoffice.org/download/ and click on "main
installer", just above the bit torrent link.
I find it quite confusing as well.

About the rpm - I should have a look at home, on my linux, but I'm
convincedyou'll find some guidings when you google rpm libreoffice or
ubuntu
libreoffice (that's how I found it)

Well, you can simply click on "Main installer" link to start downloading msi
file (just like exe, I don't know exact differences). There are direct links:
3.6.3:
http://download.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/stable/3.6.3/win/x86/LibO_3.6.3_Win_x86_install_multi.msi
3.5.7:
http://download.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/stable/3.5.7/win/x86/LibO_3.5.7_Win_x86_install_multi.msi
(you should be aware of LibreOffice version numbering scheme; read there:
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleasePlan )

As for BitTorrent - this is peer-to-peer network used to share files. Basically
each user that downloads file also shares it with other users of network. This
way download is decentralized. This takes stress out of The Document
Foundation servers, making them use less resources and pay less money for
maintenance. Also, this is environment friendly and makes our planet greener
 .
To start using bittorrent, you just need dedicated application (called
"client"). There are plenty of these for each operating system out there. Just
search web for "<name of OS> torrent client".

If you are on your PCLinux computer, it should auto-detect the files you need. If not, then right below the "Download LibreOffice" title and you will see the line:

"LibreOffice Linux - rpm (x86_64), version 3.6.3, English (US). Not the version you wanted? Change System, Version or Language"

Click on the link on that line "Change System, Version or Language" and follow the choice after this.

NB: You may want to check the software repository for your distro, it may already have the latest version available there.

Cheers,

Marc

I think the person uses PCLinux but wanted to download a copy for Windows for the teacher friend.

Actually, there was a thread about some versions of Linux that did not get detected properly, when the new-auto-detect system was added with the "new" download page design.

Hi
I think the main problem was with the button-that-is-not-really-a-button.  Each thing that looks like a button has 2 or 3 choices within it.  The aim was to reduce confusion but every once in a while someone gets thrown by it. [shrugs]  More people were more confused by the previous way we had it so it's getting better.  I had forgotten about it as an issue until the correct answer appeared yday or whenever.

Thanks Dries, Tom and Marc

You were all right in what you said.......

  * I WAS looking for the Windows version for a friend (I'm using Linux)

  * I WAS fooled by the "Button that is not a Button"!! IMHO this is a
very bad way of doing things. In computer UIs these days something
that looks like a Button is accepted as such and you just click on it!!
I would recommend a change here ASAP!!

Regarding looking in my PCLinux Repos for the latest version of LO - I'm afraid they are very slow to put these up which forces you to run a version or two behind. I have however found a couple of times that the 'normal' .rpm files DO work OK so thought I should try this again. Will give it a go later in the week.

I managed to download a .msi file yesterday for LO for Windows which, it says, is the new replacement for .exe .....
Ummm - we will see I guess.

Anyway guys thanks for the help.

Hi
Msi?  Does LO produce one of those?  Did you get it from the official LO website or elsewhere?  If elsewhere then please let us know where.  People do seem to be moving to .msis instead of .exes but i'm amazed LO has managed it already.

On the downloads page there is an introductory sentence or 2 above the button that look ilke they don't say anything much and are worth ignoring.  However!!  The words "change system or version" (or something like that) are really a clickable link.  You need to click that link to get the official download for any system that is slightly different from the one you are surfing on.

Yep, the windows download from libreoffice.org is an msi file....

Hi Tom

If you go to -

http://www.libreoffice.org/download/?type=win-x86&lang=en-ZA&version=3.6.3

And you click on the words "Main Installer" a box opens saying ...

Opening LibO_3.6.3_Win_x86_install_multi.msi
You have chosen to open
LibO_3.6.3_Win_x86_install_multi.msi
which is a: MSI file (204Mb)

And the MSI file downloads.

.msi was started for LO a few versions back in the 3.5.x line, as far as I remember.

I had the same problem. Once you have a friendly soul tell you, it's fine.
But until then, nothing seems to work right. I'm using Win7/XP.

You can always use the older style download page.

http://www.libreoffice.org/download-more/

There you can use a drop-down menu to choose which OS and language you want to download.

I use it when I download the 80+ files needed to create a new "all OS" DVD for the North American Community DVD Project.

I use Ubuntu 12.04 [64-bit DEBS] for my main system, plus Win XP and Vista on laptops, plus 32-bit Ubuntu 10.04 as well.

Hi
I have made myself very unpopular on various lists here arguing points like that.  It might be worth trying to point it out to the websites list.  Better still if you can get involved and help design an improvement.  Complaining and grumbling really doesn't get very far but actively helping sometimes does.
