Font issues with LO-5.4.x

This issue appeared when I upgraded to LO-5.4.0 and remains with today's
upgrade to -5.4.1 (on Slackware-14.2). LO Writer is not recognizing and
using fonts in /usr/share/fonts/OTF/. There is one font of particular
interest: Baker Signet.

I converted Baker Signet from .ttf to .otf using fontforge. It exists in
/usr/share/fonts/OTF/ as baker-signet.otf. However, in a Writer document
there is a Baker (capitalized) typeface in the pulldown menu, but it does
not change the displayed text.

Also converted from .ttf to .otf is Bitstream's Amerigo, and Writer
presents that as Americo BT and does use it when selected.

Since LO Writer is supposed to recognize all typefaces and fonts in
/usr/share/fonts/OTF/ I would like suggestions where to look for the source
of the problem with Baker Signet and, potentially, others.

Rich

Hi.
Is the font available and working in other software (Gimp, Inkscape...)
Steve

Steve,

Haven't tried it, but I will. Stay tuned ...

Thanks,

Rich

Steve,

Yes, it works in The GIMP and the name displayed is Baker Signet.

Is there any other place that fonts can be "installed" to?

I know that Ubuntu has the font location like what you have stated  as "/usr/share/fonts/OTF/"

There is also a hidden dot font folder with Ubuntu.  If there is, try to copy the font there and see if it works.

Can you please tell me why you converted Baker Signet from TTF to OTF,    I never converted any font myself, so I do not know what OTF gives you over the TTF version.

I have used both with Ubuntu since version "9.10", so I never thought about the difference.

I can’t get out of full screen in LO Writer.

Supposedly, and for other apps, the green maximize button is supposed to reappear when you hover the mouse near the top of the screen. Doesn’t work in LO.

Esc doesn’t exit full screen in LO.

Cmd-Ctrl-F is supposed to exit full screen. It does, but to a totally black screen.

So what’s the secret in LO and why doesn’t it work with the usual Mac moves?

Running LO 5.3.6.1 on Mac Sierra.

Yes, one can make a ~/.fonts directory which is accessible to only the
user. Those in /usr/share/fonts/ are available system-wide. If LO doesn't
reognize a font in one place it won't recognize it in another place.

Beside, my fonts have resided in the system default directory for 20+
years without problems, except for the occasional issue with a specific
application.

never converted any font myself, so I do not know what OTF gives you over
the TTF version.

LO dropped support for TrueType fonts with version 5 and replaced that
with support for OpenTypeFormat fonts. The fontforge tool allows one to
create new fonts and convert existing one from one type or encoding to
another.

Rich

Where is this documented? All I could find were statements that LO dropped support for Type 1 fonts.

Hi Eric,

I can’t get out of full screen in LO Writer.

Supposedly, and for other apps, the green maximize button is supposed to reappear when you hover the mouse near the top of the screen. Doesn’t work in LO.

This works for me on my MBPro (2015), OSX 10.12.6 and LO 5361.

If I activate the fullscreen mode of an open Calc document for example
by clicking on green window control button to expand the window, then
move the mouse cursor anywhere to the top of the screen and the window
control buttons appear, including the green one to leave fullscreen
mode. In this mode, the document window isn't truly fullscreen as there
are black borders top and bottom.

If I use Ctrl-Cmd-F to move the document to fullscreen, I still see the
green button of the window control, and the whole window fills all of
the screen. Clicking on the green button should reduces the window back
to its previous size, however, as you have discovered, this doesn't work
properly.

The way to workaround this is to switch contexts, i.e. switch Space
(Ctrl-Left/Right arrow), click on an icon on the Desktop or another
application window (not LO) and then switch back to LO again. You should
now see window controls if you move the mouse up to the top of the screen.

Cmd-Ctrl-F is supposed to exit full screen. It does, but to a totally black screen.

Known bug.

So what’s the secret in LO and why doesn’t it work with the usual Mac moves?

There's no secret - LO doesn't support MacOS fullscreen correctly, and
the internal code that it does use is at best a fudge. There are a
number of bug reports already in the LO bugzilla about it.

Robert,

Not sure, but that's what I was told by someone who uses LO a lot. Yes,
Type 1 fonts need to be converted, too. However, in my situation the
typeface baker-signet is present as both .ttf and .otf so LO should use
either one. My issue is that it's using neither.

I just checked my list of TTF fonts with what LibreOffice sees and can use.  I have ones that are icon/glyph "letters" that do not have anything to do with Latin or other letter styles.  Those TTF fonts work fine.

Most of the fonts I use are TTF versions.  [most of my 14 GB worth of fonts, in my font storage folder, are TTF versions]

I currently use LO 5.3.6.1 on an Ubuntu 16.04LTS laptop - the laptop I am typing from.  I do not think any Win10 or Ubuntu partition/system is still running versions lower than 5.2.1.

Tim-L,

I'll look in the TTF directory and see what I have.

Since I run neither Microsoft nor a Ubuntu this does not apply. I've run
Slackware the past 14 years. Current LO version is 5.4.1.

hello.
if you have this problem in version 5.4.0 only, do remember that use
the version that its third digit is 6!
the versions that there third digit is 0, are unfortunately unstable
and have many bugs!
hope that help, God bless you!
