Fonts suddenly stopped working

This is odd; I'm not aware of any configuration changes which happened, but suddenly EVERY non-English character is suddenly showing up as a placeholder.

This is on Ubuntu 12.10; my locale is set to en_US.UTF-8, using version 3.6

I have fonts for Japanese and Chinese characters available; I'm just not sure how to determine what the problem is.
