Given up spellchecking?

Writer seems to have stopped spellchecking, even though I have the
standard dictionary set correctly (I think, to English -UK), and all
the other language options I can find being set correctly, and in
fact set the same way as before it (recently) stopped spell checking.

A "manual" spell check finds no errors whatsoever (I've put some in,
to make sure), there are no words underlined in red to indicate
misspelling, and if I put in an incorrectly spelled word, LO doesn't
complain.

More than that, each time I access the dialog (sic  ) to set the
hyphenating, it presents itself as "English (USA)", however many
times I set it to "English (UK)".

This is LO 3.3.2, under Fedora (15).
It was working until very recently. A large proportion of KDE has
updated in the last couple of days, but I don't see that this should
have a bearing on this part of LO.

Any ideas?

Hi

Grrr, this does seem to happen in LibreOffice occasionally. It's not just you
and probably nothing to do with the updates in KDE either. I can't remember how
to solve it but it's in one of the messy threads if you are able to search
them? I think it's something to do with

Tools - Options - "Language Settings"
and then both the "Languages" and "Writing Aids" have settings you need to
re-set (hopefully just once more).

The chap that knows most about this is likely to be on-line a little later and
might be able to help better. There is probably a bug-report about it already

Check under TOOLS>>OPTIONS in the Options Box under Language Settings
then Writing Aids and make sure that dictionaries and utilities are
available and assuming they are that they are selected. On my system
Ubuntu/Pinguy 11.04, LO 3.4.1) the spell checker is Hundspell. Also,
make sure the option the options in the center group of check boxes are
enabled and in the bottom check box that at least top two are checked
for checking spelling and grammar as you go.

Truthfully I am not sure way this problem occurred. My guess is that the
KDE update unintentionally changed a setting thinking you had KOffice
installed.

Hi Both ("all" in fact)

This seems to be the crux of it.

On my system
Ubuntu/Pinguy 11.04, LO 3.4.1) the spell checker is Hundspell.

Hunspell isn't appearing in the list of "Available language modules",
whereas it does on my Windoze setup. It looks like it's been vaped. But
how do I get it back? I've been wandering around the filesystem looking
for something that sounds like spelling, but I can't find it.

The "edit" option on that dialogue edits the available modules. Those are
the ones that insist in being in "English (US)" even when I change them to
"English (UK)".

Hi
Just open the package manager and search for hunspell in there. Actually i did
a search for libreoffice and hunspell appeared in my package manager. I don't
know how to acess the package manager in Fedora. I use Synaptic in Ubuntu and i
have a funny feeling that fedora also uses Synaptic but i could easily be
wrong. The package manager is usually in your "System" menu or in "Tools" or
"Utilities".

Hi Tom,

Just open the package manager and search for hunspell in there.

D*mn! I could'a sworn I'd done that and it wasn't there.
I've just done it again and it *is* there. Unfortunately it *is*
installed. "Best uninstall & re-install" I thought. If I try to
uninstall it KPackagekit (the local GUI installer) says it'll also
uninstall "LibreOffice Core"... :frowning:
That's a bit drastic :expressionless:

If it's installed then I just need to find a way to (re)tell LO
about it. Any hints gratefully received.

Perhaps this bug ? Updates seem to cause sporadic and differing
configuration problems in the userspace, the bug below relates to
spellchecking :

Hi
I am sure it's something to do with just settings. There was a thread about it
a few months ago. "Webmaster at Kracked Press" had a good answer but i can't
find the thread. I don't know if this is it but in
Tools - Options - LibreOffice - Paths
is AutoCorrect set at something like
/home/username/.libreoffice/3/user/autocorr

Also in
Tools - Options - LibreOffice - "Language Settings" - Languages
there are 4 drop-downs. The top one often reverts to "English (USA)" but i
think they all 'should' be on "Default - English (UK)" ecept currency which
'should' by "Default - GBP" and the bottom option about fonts doesn't have
"Default" at the start.

In the top box of the 3 boxes in
Tools - Options - LibreOffice - "Language Settings" - "Writing Aids"
I have "Hunspell SpellChecker" ticked. In the middle box i have 4
"dictionaries" ticked
standard [ALL]
soffice [ALL]
technical [ALL]
IgnoreAllList [ALL]

In the bottom box i have ticked "check spelling as you type" along with most of
the rest of them except "Check words with numbers" and "Hyphenate without
inquiry".

I have CC'd the message directly to you in the hope that you get the attached
screen-shots that way in case they look completely different from yours.
Good luck and regards from

Hi Tom,

Thanks for taking the time with this one.

I am sure it's something to do with just settings. There was a thread about it
a few months ago. "Webmaster at Kracked Press" had a good answer but i can't
find the thread.

I'll have a look.

I don't know if this is it but in
Tools - Options - LibreOffice - Paths

/home/username/.libreoffice/3/user/autocorr

Yup. Although there are no files in that directory. Perhaps that's not important.

Also in
Tools - Options - LibreOffice - "Language Settings" - Languages
there are 4 drop-downs. The top one often reverts to "English (USA)"

I can't get it to say anything else. Where can a reset a language to give me more options for
this dropdown? I've reset the locale & language in Fedora, that doesn't seem to do it! :frowning:

But i
think they all 'should' be on "Default - English (UK)" ecept currency which
'should' by "Default - GBP"

Default doesn't seem to be an option, they're all countries & currencies. Mine is set to GBP.

In the top box of the 3 boxes in
Tools - Options - LibreOffice - "Language Settings" - "Writing Aids"
I have "Hunspell SpellChecker" ticked.

This seems to be the crux of it. Hunspell doesn't appear in that box, and I don't see any way
to add it, from this dialogue anyway.

In the middle box i have 4
"dictionaries" ticked
standard [ALL]
soffice [ALL]
technical [ALL]
IgnoreAllList [ALL]

I have added a couple of dictionaries, but I have these you mention too.

In the bottom box i have ticked "check spelling as you type" along with most of
the rest of them except "Check words with numbers" and "Hyphenate without
inquiry".

Yup, pretty much my setup too.

I have CC'd the message directly to you in the hope that you get the attached
screen-shots that way in case they look completely different from yours.

Nope, not got that.

Im haste

One small step for mankind...

I had a look at this and it really is in the "too hard" category.
Loads of files and directories where you mention, just trying to work
out which ones should and shouldn't be hanging around was making my
head hurt.

On the other hand, the speel chucker is quite useful.

I'll have apply myself to it when I've got some time free (hah!).
If the next Fedora repository update doesn't clear it up, maybe I'll
just remove it completely and reinstall to see if that'll do it. :frowning:

Thanks
