Bruce,

I have my issues with FOSS in general, and some with LO specifically.

But, I don't want to have that discussion in this thread. I've also mentioned my issues once in awhile in other threads as part of the conversation, and not to hijack the thread.

If you start another thread about this, I'll post. Otherwise, I'll let it go.

It's highly unlikely that Thunderbird has a problem with addresses
containing a plus sign. I've had no trouble doing so using multiple
versions of Thunderbird (for OS X, Solaris and Linux), indeed I
subscribed to these lists via the email interface.

Regards,
Ben

It was not my intent to start a fight as the term "Gunfight" suggests,
though I expected this outcome. I regret having stepped on the toes of
proprietary fundamentalists. But I am not the one who threw the first swing.

It is my experience that those most willing to fight have never had to take
it to its final conclusion. I have. It is not pretty nor fun. It is serious
business.

People all have issues with all manner of things. However, flying off the
handle and attacking a group of people who are trying to help over a group
of people who can't slow down long enough to follow the instructions that
were given to solve their issue is hardly constructive.

I don't know the answer to your mp3 issue. I've never had the need to
perform your desired task. I'd like to learn. But I don't care anything
about reading a temper tantrum tirade because someone didn't get what they
wanted when they wanted it. Good will is in such short supply today because
people abuse it.

I wish now that I had continued my long standing practice of laughing at
such behavior and moving on. I have always wondered why those who lash out
at others object when they are responded to in kind. It boggles the mind!

Corporations and those who support them are the makers of war. Just ask one
of the most highly decorated US Marines, Smedley
Butler<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smedley_Butler>.
He stated that as a Marine he was little more than a thug for corporate
domination. But that is another story. Suffice it to say that I would work
with people over corporations any day. After all, corporations merely steal
from people and then charge other people for it!

I monitor these lists in hopes of actually learning something. I realize
that I might actually have to think, think for myself, and DO something. But
I get satisfaction from doing it and from doing it myself. And I appreciate
any community help that I might receive along the way.

And I have another issue here as well: it is Summitt, just as I spelled it.
It's an American Civil War thing. (And I'm sure I know my own name better
than you). But that, too, would be a history lesson and I don't think that
any of us are here for that.

I will not disrupt this list again. If you or anyone else wish to attack me
again for your having first attacked this list, I will simply unsubscribe (I
know how to) and come back another day. This list is here to help; not to
suffer the insults of imbeciles. I don't really need the list anyway. I
manage just fine. I can always learn. And I can try to help. But I can learn
elsewhere and NOT help those who only wish to war.

I am so happy that LO forked from Oracle. And I thank the community, too.
But I'll no longer bicker with takers who only give back insults and injury.
I CAN. I just choose not to.

Have a nice day.

Hi
There is more complexity than is obvious here. Timi has asked for help a number
of times and not been helped with getting sound working in Impress.

He wants to use LO but is blocked and no-one is helping him. He is afraid that
he will have to return to MSO because apparently no-one knows how to get sound
links working in Impress. Perhaps it can't be done. Perhaps Impress
presentations can't have sound at all in any format.

This involves a loss of face for him. His work colleagues say he was a fool for
trying OpenSource but he has put a lot of time & effort into getting it
working. Because Impress doesn't work with sound at all (apparently) he has to
return to using PowerPoint which is slow. People who advertise OpenSource often
claim it is faster and that support is better but to him and his colleagues the
opposite has been proven and Timi will suffer for that but so will LO.

So far while Timi came here asking for help quite a long time ago now all that
the community has done is to either ignore him or attack him, even bully him,
but certainly not help him.

Our documentation team is very tiny with most of the work being done by only
about 4 people. Even in OOo there is very little documentation about Impress
but our documentation team is trying to get around to working on it. They do
have other, more urgent priorities tho.

So, this whole situation, each part of it, is not the fault of any 1 individual
but has been an unfortunate combination.

"Different strokes for different folks."

All you had to do to solve this problem for yourself was to make a
filter for your mail client to delete any message from this list
containing the string "unsubscribe". If you are lonesome or homesick for
the warm embrace of Mama Microsoft, that's also a solution, but
flaunting the neurosis in public does you very little credit.

Hi
Another unhelpful and unnecessary post. The mailing list is full of them.

Please can we attempt to be welcoming and deal with issues that make people
angry or upset? It is very easy to lash out in anger but less easy to act with
compassion and intelligence to solve problems rather than to escalate or create
them.

One other thought:

I understand that you are frustrated because "over 400 files linked ... all
vanish without warning". Without intending to sound like a smart@$$, here is
a suggestion: backup.

In news:4DBAD4EA.13628.C09DC1D@timi.iafrica.com,

Helmar,

I have no idea how to un-subscribe (other than I kept a
copy of a very informative email I saw a few days
ago).... it's an issue I may have to deal with in the
near future.

have to agree the "instructons" you get with each mail (above) are a little
cryptic, so ... since you're now using the nntp I'll say this:

Using the same e-mail address you joined the mailing list from, send an
email to the address users+hel... in the top line and put "unsubscribe" in
the body. If it doesn't need the unsubscribe it's my understanding it will
be ignored.

If this is wrong, someone correct me. I happen to side with the questioners
on this one: there's the address (in a format some might not be able to use
because of the + sign if they have very old mail clients) and there is
nothing about leaving everythinig else blank or putting unsubscrbe in the
body or whatever.
This poster whould have been specific about what he tried and what didn't
work, and the responders should have more to says than a terse "go read it".
Only the e-mal receving the mail list can be used to unsubscribe you.

HTH,

Twayne`

<snip>

Does that mean that the unsubscribe instructions finally work? I've
been kind of out of all this for a while, but the last time I looked
in on this issue, it wasn't working. I had a second email address
subscribed, and I had to send a personal email to Florian before I
could get unsubscribed - manually by Florian.

I don't want to unsub again, and I don't want the hassle of
subscribing a new email address and then not being able to unsub it
again, just to test.

Does anyone know for sure?

As for the rest (insults to FOSS, etc.), if you don't like it, don't
use it. It's not like you have to pay for it....

Bruce,

Thanks for advice about backing -up... I do! I can go to a backed up copy of Impress
presentation with all 400 links present.... close the program and reload and 25% chance all
links have vanished.

Go back and load backup copy.... links ok then sometimes on save/close and subsequent re-
open all links gone.

The risk is immediate and instant... all you need to do is save your current file.

The absolute risk is standing up in front of a few important customers .. start presentation....
no sound... links vanish.

I am not able to indentify as to what triggers this wipe out.... if I open each "interaction play
sound" links then the path is displayed and is correct. The link however is dead. As I've said
before to refresh the link you can't copy and paste as it does not restore the link. The only
way to refresh the link is to re-browse the path and click OK then the link is restored.

Surely there's someone in LibO team who could recognise these symptoms? I mean what
activity can access the links to reset them or somehow invalidate them?

I even wondered if when I defrag my drives I could somehow upset the pathways....

I'm sure someone will say it's XP's problem (which may well be true). I asked a linux wizz to
run the presentation on Ubuntu and so far the links are stable. Minor problem my customers
are all MS.

Same problem also occurs under Win7 environment.

The second problem is if you attempt to convert from impress odp to xls and them open in
MS all the text and pictures are ok but the audio links non-existant. I can only think the
"interaction - play sound" function in Impress is different to MS and hence the loss.

BTW if we all adopted the attitude of never trying new systems and just be content with MS
then as a race we deserve to die out.

I still want to persevere with Impress because of it's interface.... I cannot manage the
retarded GUI of current powerpoint.

unimpressed Impress user

Hi

Obviously to do a presentation in front of people it might often be possible to

1. install Ubuntu or something to an 8Gb Usb-stick as a proper install not as a
LiveUsb. Then various programs and files would be your familiar desktop
where-ever you are. I do this.

or

2. install LibreOffice to a usb-stick using the Portable Apps install and then
be able to access those apps on any Windows machine (in theory).

However there are always possible problems. Some machines have their boot-order
locked so that option 1 doesn't work. Sometimes hardware doesn't work straight
away so it might take quite some effort to find the drivers for a particular
projector if a venue doesn't like you using your own (assuming it is possible to
take your own) and that can make option 1 and 2 difficult.

All this assumes that you are doing the presentation. However, you might need
to work with other people to develop parts of the presentation or you might need
to send people the complete presentation for them to run in a format they can
use.

Timi has sometimes said xls where he clearly means ppt which has caused some
confusion where people have been more keen on finding a way of criticising
someone rather than trying to help.

My advice to Timi has to be to stick to PowerPoint because clearly Impress is
not ready and the LibreOffice Community is also not ready to help people with
it. Writer is good and Calc is ok but Base is tricky and Impress is unusable.
