Installation of Help Pack For LibreOffice 3.6.2

I am using Linux Slackware 13.37, 32-bit. I am fairly novice with Linux.

I have installed LibreOffice 3.6.2 using the SlackBuilds.com script (I modified the line which starts with VERSION).

Now I would like to also install the corresponding Help Pack, available here:
http://www.libreoffice.org/download/?type=rpm-x86&lang=en-US&version=3.6.2

Does anyone know how to do it? There is no SlackBuilds.com script that I
could find and Google did not turn up anything helpful in this
respect...

I will post the same question on LinuxQuestions.org (Slackware forum).

Hi
Best to just get the official guides, even if it's just 1 chapter at a time as needed
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Publications
You can get the full guides from there and there are also links to printed copies via Lulu "on demand" and also 3rd party documentation.  The printed guides and some of the 3rd party documentation sometimes costs money but you can download the official guides for free.

The help files that you are
trying to install are well worth forgetting about.  They are quite
helpful but are really quite out-of-date now.  It's handy to have quick
help available from inside the program in quick bite-sized chunks but
much of it may be wrong or incurrate or even misleading now.  The docs team could really use a hand because the program is developing faster than the small team of writers can write!  They are quite prolific but most Office Suites only need a new set of guides once every 3 or 4 years.  LO needs a new set every 6 months!  So i would stick with the official guides and forget the in-built help if it's not easy to install.

Slackware!!  Blimey!  It's a tough one to pick for a first venture into Gnu&Linux-land!  Most people tend to go with one of the noob-friendly point&click "gateway" distros such as Ubuntu, Mint, Mageia.  However it does have quite a few advantages for a 1st venture.

Allegedly Slackers are dead-set against Office Suites.  If you have not yet posted the question to LinuxQuestions.Org then consider (just for this question);
1.  Posting in a more general forum and avoid the specifically slackware one
2.  If you do post in the Slackware area then perhaps rephrase it in a more general way such as "How does one install something when there is no SlackBuilds script yet?"

If you have managed to get LibreOffice working then you deserve congrats.  You are a far more advanced Gnu&Linux user than most of us that have been using Gnu&Linux for many years.  (That's an accolade you quickly gain when using something as tough as Slackware and one of the advantages of using it)

Congrats and regards from

This is what was suggested on LinuxQuestions.com. I think the suggestions
pretty much answers my question.

/*I had the same problem as you; I wanted to have the corresponding
help pack,
and came across the same lack of SlackBuilds and ready-made packages.
However, I came up with a solution that might help. Type this into a
console
(assuming you've downloaded the package already):

     cd LibO_3.6.2.2_Linux_x86_helppack-rpm_en-US/RPMS
     rpm2txz libobasis3.6-en-US-help-3.6.2.2-2.i586.rpm
     installpkg libobasis3.6-en-US-help-3.6.2.2-2.i586.txz

The rpm2txz utility is quite useful in these kinds of situations. Hope
this helps.*/<unquote>

Thanks, Tom.
Yes, Slackware is not the easiest Linux distribution to install and/or use.
But it is ok with me... I don't have to use Linux to get (real) work done,
so I can spend as much time as I want learning and tinkering with this OS
without being worried about productivity.

Hi
Ahh cool :)  So, you are happy without the inbuilt help files?  Btw have you had any responses from LinuxQuestions.Org?  If so can you give a link to the thread there?  Don't worry if you are shy of doing that.  A few of us know how to search discretely just to see what they are up to.

Hi
Ahh, that Alien Pastures website
http://alien.slackbook.org/blog/bugfix-packages-for-libreoffice/
has reminded me of another one he posted on very early on, just after LO first appeared.  Plus all the positive comments in LinuxQuestions just kinda proves to me that i was wrong about Slackers being anti Office Suites on principle (or at all in fact).  Sometimes being wrong is really great :D  Boosted my morale :)
Thanks and regards from

Tiziano,
Have you resolved this problem?
I have created a SlackBuild script to repackage both LO and the helppack into a single Slackware installation package. However, I was reluctant to send it to you because it is not tested with Slack 13+. I am using Slack 12.2. I can tweek it for 13+ for you, but I still can't test it, so it may still need a bit of work to get it to work on your system. If you want to try it, let me know and I can tarball it and the other files I use to repackage LO for Slack and send it to you. Note: My SlackBuild script does a lot more than the usual SlackBuild scripts, but it is commented fairly well.

Thanks for the offer, Girvin.
I was able to successfully install the Help Pack using the command "rpm2txz", so everything is ok.  (However, Tom is right in saying that the Help Pack is quite outdated...)

Tiziano,
Good. I am glad you got it working.
Yes, the help is out-dated. But it comes in handy now and then.

+1
to all that.  It is handy to have quick help so easily available even if it is a little dated.  Nice work both of you!  I hope there is somewhere good to keep the script.
