Large fonts

Hi: I would like to print some things in font size 200. In libreoffice
you can only go up to about 96. I have tried putting in a larger number
but it won't work.

Is there any way in libreoffice to print in larger fonts than 96?

Hi M. Whiting,
I think you can do it, writing the size in the box.

Hi,

In all versions of LO I've used, including 4.2.1.1 now, if you highlight the number in the box showing the font size, say for example 12, then type in the size, say 400, you want and press enter, it will change to that size. I use it where I want numbers or letters to be about 4 inches tall. I general change the page layout to landscape for numbers/letters that size. I've never had a problem. You don't get many on an 8.5 x 11' page. I'm running LO on Ubuntu 123.10 presently.

I am using LO 4.2.1 on a Mac, system 10.9.1, using Default Style
When I put the cursor back on the page after entering the font size 400, the
font size reverts to 12.
I have tried Clear Direct Formatting, but it still reverts to 12.
I have also tried different fonts.

I have tried typing in the fonts size 18 and that to reverts to 12 also, but
if I use the arrow menu to select 18, that works.

Hi
Tink when you try to solve the initial problem by doing "clear direct
formatting" you are clearing the 400 and forcing it back to the
style's size! So it might be better to set a style, or create a new
style and set that to have font size 400 (or whatever).

As for the initial problem i don't suffer from that on LO 3.5.7 on
Ubuntu. I thought that the Mac version was the same as the Gnu&Linux
(Ubuntu, Mint, Redhat, openSuSE, Mageia etc) one but it would make
sense if it's the BSD one instead. Even so i thought the BSD one was
almost identical to the Gnu&Linux one. I think it's only the Windows
one that is much different. Sadly i can't try out more recent
versions of LO on this machine easily. At work i was on a much more
recent version but i didn't try to click back into the document after
setting the size to 400. Grrr, sorry about that!

It's interesting to hear that other people don't seem to be having a
problem with a directly typed-in value for font size but i'm wondering
if they clicked into the document again afterwards. I'm wondering if
your or my machine has a wonky UserProfile or if it's something else.

So is it possible to re-use an existing style or create a new called
"HugeFont" or something and then set that font to 400? Does that do
the trick?

Hello Tom,

It shouldn't need be necessary to click back into the doc(1). Here, I
typed 400 in the font size box, then hit <return>. *Nothing* visibly
changed in the document. Note, by nothing I mean just that; not even
the cursor changed size. Then I typed a character, and lo-and-behold,
it was in 400 point, as was the cursor.

(1) In fact it's only when I clicked back in to the doc that I got the
resetting font issue.

LO 4.5.0.2 - Windows 7

I agree with Brad: clicking back into the document resets the font hitting return after typing in the big font size does not reset the font.

Hello Tom,

Good point! So you can keep the 400-point font size as long as you
don't click back in. That means you can probably print it and do

I should point out that I didn't select any text when I set the 400 point
size. If I select text then set the point size, the text selected does
change size, and I can click into that area and retain size, etc.

various things but it is limiting. For example if you save it then
open again doe the saved version retain the 400 point?

Yes, I saved and re-opened the file without issue.

My font size does not readjust after i clcik back in so i can't test
the parameters of this but it seems like a bug to me.

That depends. If the OP is setting point size w/o any text selection
and clicking back into the document, I'm not surprised that font
settings are, seemingly, lost. Why? Because I find it's very hard to
click in exactly the right spot to hit the cursor at the new font size
delimiting point. However, extracting the content.xml part of the
saved .odt file shows that the font and size are set, but contain no
text. At least, that's what I think it's showing.

Hi Tink,

Hi
Ahhh, got it at last!! Yes, you have to press enter while you are
still in the tiny font-selector box to make it accept the new number
that you just typed in. Otherwise the program just assumes you were
speculating and had changed your mind.

Sorry i thought the problem was something else

*Doh*

All I had to do was hit ENTER.
