libreoffice 4.4.0.2 on opensuse 13.2 tumbleweed, kde 4.14.4

Hi

i'm getting a regular issue with opening a writer document, copying some text
(highlight text with mouse and ctrl-c) and when i'm about to do something with
the copied text, the keyboard locks up (num light on) and the mouse can move
about the screen but cannot click on anything. I have to reboot the system to
recover.

Is anyone else having this problem?

regards

Ian

Hi Ian,

I am assuming this is an existing document. Not new? Any document in particular or any?
Is the CTRL-C the first thing you do?
How big is the text you highlight?
No problems in previous versions I assume!

Any other info would be useful to track this down. I had a go on Fedora/Cinnamon but I can't break it.

Cheers

I've tried this on the same system with a pre-existing .odt document and
could not reproduce it.

Hi
That is not saying the problem doesn't exist. It just means that
there might be a way of fixing it. Sorry, it's just that people new
to this mailing list might not understand what we try to do to help
people here and thus might not have realised how useful Graham's post
is.

I wonder if just renaming the User Profile might help fix it?

it doesn;t happen every time so unfortunately i can't reproduce at will.
under the 4.3 version i was actually copying text from a browser to paste into
the exisitng Writer document. But on 4.4 i was copying the text from ODT and
the creating a new ODT document to paste into, it created the new empty text
document but that was as far as it got before it died

Cheers

I think i'll just have to keep my eye on it and see if it happens again

THanks for your reply

Thanks for trying, unfortunately it doesn;t happen every time so hopefully it
won;t happen anymore

I don't know if it's related, but there was previously an issue where pasting content including images from a web page sometimes froze LibreOffice while it downloaded the images. If the images were large, or you're on a slow connection, it could take a while and appear completely unresponsive. That was discussed on bug 60415 <https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=60415>, and seemed to be fixed in 4.3.0.4. Always possible that it's regressed though.

If the pasted images are linked to the original content (so that they automatically update), it might also connect back to the original web site when copying that content from one document to another. Perhaps check Edit > Links on the source document and try breaking any links listed there before copying (unless, of course, you want the images to remain linked so that they automatically update in your document when they change online).

If this is the problem, and you want to avoid the delays when pasting content from a web page, you can use Edit > Paste Special > Unformatted Text to get the text, then individually copy any images you want and use Edit > Paste Special > Bitmap (or anything other than one of the HTML or Unformatted Text options). The text and images won't be formatted as they were on the original web page, but that's not always a bad thing as you'll be starting from a relatively clean state to format as you like.

Hi
If it starts happening a lot, or if you just feel like it, then it
might be worth reinstalling one of the 4.3.x. That 3rd digit is a bit
like a "Service Pack" on MS products. Generally the higher that
number the less unexpected problems occur. It's often even worth
going for the earlier branch, or even the one before that - just in
order to get that 3rd digit really high.

On the other hand the earlier you go the less fancy features you get,
and a bit (or a lot) less easy to read MS formats.

So, hopefully you find the right balance to suit your needs as most of
us do :))

It was all text but when copying from teh webpage it may have included some
thing i didn;t see. But the latest times were from Writer to Writer with no
images

I'll give that a try if it happens again

Cheers. LO is my favoured office tool so i doubt it'll upset me too much. I
can't be sure it was LO causing the issue. I've had issues with copy and paste
from other things like Firefox where it won;t paste anything i copied from
Firefox.
i did post the issue on the opensuse lists as well but i didn;t get any
response from there.

If that happens, click on the clipboard icon. You may find that what
you copied is not at the top of Klipper's list and/or is not ticked. If
that is the case, click on the item you want copied.

No idea why this happens but it has caught me out several times.

Thanks, I didn't think of that.
