libreoffice writer freezes in ubunt 12.04

Friends,
I am using libreoffice Version: 4.1.4.2 in ubuntu 12.04. I am able to open
even big documents and work on it without any problem. However when i try
to select a word and change the font color or highlight color etc, the
libreoffice write freezes completely.

To see if this could be related to the desktop effects, I have tried using
both classic ubuntu and ubuntu 2D desktops. In both the cases, the freezing
persists. Any idea how i can resolve it.

Thanks,
Bala

I am just giving you avenues and do not have direct knowledge of your failure type.

Try opening the document and saving it as a new one. See if you get the same results with the new one.
If you create a new document, does it behave the same?

or

Try a complete un-install and then re-install of LIbreOffice.

or

Although unlikely, It may be a permission issue with the document.
Are you the original owner of the document or a part of a group with read write access.
Since it is Ubuntu, you should be able to right click on the document to see its permission in ?Property?.

When you say you can "work on it without any problem", does that me you can add and delete text via keyboard but not use your mouse for editing?
It is an odd situation when a mouse will work perfectly with all other software except one. In which case, see your mouse settings in system settings or try a different mouse.

Hope that I have helped.

Known bug in Ubuntu 12.04.
AFAIK, the only work around is to use a different distro. Specifically a distro that nebver came close to Ubuntu, as its base.(That rules out Mint, which exhibits the same bug, albeit far less frequently.)

Don't experience this problem on 64-bit Linux Mint 16, which is based on
Ubuntu 13.10....

Which desktop environment are you using with Mint?
Cinnamon
Mate
or something else? I know that Mint offers[ed] several desktop environments to choose from. The poster seems to be using Ubuntu and Unity. So it may be something with Unity or the Debian environment, or not.

I run Ubuntu 12.04/MATE but have not upgraded to 4.1.4 from 4.0.6.

Sorry, Kracked_P_P, I should indeed have mentioned that I'm using the
Cinnamon desktop - as I do even when I'm running Ubuntu itself....

Hi,

I have no problems with LibreOffice 4.1.4.2 in Ubuntu 13.10 on several different computers.I use the version from The document foundation, and not from Ubuntu.
If you are using the Ubuntu version and wish to try The Document Foundation version, you must purge your system of all of the Ubuntu version. Instructions can be found here:

Don

PS - I'm running Unity with Ubuntu 13.10.

Don, I can - and probably should - mention that I'm running
1:4.1.4~rc2-0ubuntu1~saucy1~ppa1, i e, the Ubuntu version installed via the
PPA on my machine, without experiencing the difficulties described by Bala
on Ubuntu 12.04....
