Thanks for this, Jorge, but unfortunately it doesn't work. To be clear,
when I said:
"I have tried all the usual advice about slowness with Libreoffice,
viz. changing the memory settings"
I meant that I had tried just what you suggest (and decreasing the undo
steps, and so on).
Oh well. Will have to find an alternative. LO is unusable for what I
need as things stand.

You should check if the problem is in LibreOffice itself or in its
integration in KDE. To do that, you could create a new Ubuntu session
with Unity or Gnome window manager, and try in this new session.
