Limit on resizing windows in LO 6

I am not sure if this is a bug or there is some adjustment I have missed. However, running LO6 in Mageia Linux, LO limits the minimum screen width. I cannot reduce Writer to less than about 60% of the screen width, while Calc will go down to a bit under half.

IS this a bug (saw nothing in a quick glance at bugzilla) or am I missing something?

Running on Mageia 7 with Enlightenment 22.1 on an Asus K53SD laptop

I had a similar problem with this until the KDE side of LO was installed - not sure exactly what the KDE library is but i guess for better integration with the KE desktop which i use but when it was pure GTK i could only partially minimise the width plus a few other issues with cut and paste into documents.

Ubuntu Mate 16.04 using LO 6.0.0.3 works fine with Writer going down below a third of the screen with.  I did install some KDE packages a few years ago. I do not know how much of the KDE libraries were installed and how much is still on that laptop.

I feel a little silly, but I finally figured out what was happening. On my machine with 6.0 I added the Anaphareus extension which appears as an option on the main bar -- and the length of the bar determines the minimum width of the window.

So, is there a way to change the size of the font on menu bar to reduce its size?

I haven't followed every post on this thread, but is this behavior new
to LO 6? I find that, with my very old 5.1.6 on Linux Mint 18, I can
reduce the window size to anything I want and the toolbars just collapse
to fit my bidding.

Hi all:

You can modify the size of the icons of toolbars: Menu-Tools-Options-View-User Interface-Toolbar Icon Size (Automatic -default-, Small, Large and Extra Large).

Beside, you can customize what icon function keep in the toolbars, and reduce it size if you eliminate some icons:

Menu-Tools-Customize-Toolbars-"Standar bar" and "Formatting bar". There it is necessary to uncheck the functions icons that you don't want to keep in the toolbars.

I hope this help,

Thanks to all who have responded, but let me see if I can clarify and add to what I havve learned.

1. The limiting factor is the menu bar (File, Edit, View . . .) where there are no icons. What is worse, I have a Spanish interface which makes some of the items (words only) longer. I have seen no way to change the size of the font on the bar, nor is it possible to hide the menu bar, although there is a work around to create a macro to do so mentioned in LO and OO fora.

2. The Anaphraseus extension is added to the menu bar, not a tool bar.

3. The problem does affect LO 5.4.3.2 which I have on the computer from which I am responding. It did not bother me there because I have yet to add that extension there. However, minimum sizing IS affected by the space required for the menu bar. (As a parenthetical comment, when I work quikly, I can resize the window smaller UNTIL the menu bar loads. I offer this in case someone wants to test on an affected installation.)

4. This is NOT a problem in the Windows version of 6.0. Sizing the window smaller simply progressively hides the menu bar.

5. Although LO has always been GTK based in Linux, I am not sure if it now has a Qt interface to integrate better with KDE/Plasma which may not be affected, hence my addition of GTK to the subject line. (Input here welcome!)

6. MOST IMPORTANT: Now that I understand better what is going on, Tomorrow, I will recheck LO's Bugzilla for existing bugs and if none is reported, will report this. I will also report the bug number to this list, in this thread so that others can see and add to it.

Again, many thanks for the help on this matter.

For what it's worth, it's not a problem on my LO 5.1.6.2 on Linux Mint
18 or LO 5.3.3.2 on Puppy Tahr Linux. On both systems, the menu bar just
collapses as I shrink the window.

Not a problem with my 5.4.5.1 on openSUSE Leap 42.3 either. English
interface with no extensions, if that matters, and I can make windows
as narrow as I want (1 pixel if I choose). I use the LXDE desktop.

Thanks to both Virgil and Dave. This suggests that I need to start with my distro (Mageia) and DE (E21/22) first. I have seen no related bugs, which suggests that this indeed may not be a LO problem.

Thanks again to everyone on the list who responded to this issue. After filing this with Mageia, it turns out that the problem also appears in Fedora. There is now an active LO bug report as it seems to be related to the port to GTK+3:
