List types renamed

Hello,

in recent help and UI changes in master/7.2 I see many changes due to
renaming of the list types (numbered/bullet -> ordered/unordered).

Why this change?

Has anyone of the proponents of this change checked with the l10n and
documentation teams what such a change in UI, help means and what scope of
needed changes/work that causes?

Thanks,
m.

Hi Martin,

Discussion has gone through this ticket I think:

Thanks, Sophie.

It seems very logical, but it brings many new changes that are not
mentioned or discussed there.

All existing user guides will be obsolete for the 7.2 version (including
the now emerging 7.1 Writer guide) regarding lists ...
Not to mention all the changes for l10n teams ...

yes, you are right. I encourage you to have a look at the agenda of
Design/UX meetings. Heiko provides a detail of what will be discussed
https://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/design/

There are also some info on the pad, but it's more reading

Yes, however, as you can see on the issue, that has been deeply thought
and discussed for the overall consistency between style and direct
formatting and labels. When it's a good clarification for our users, it
should be done at some time.

At least l10n shouldn't sweat too much because of these two strings ;-).

But message received, if we go through major changes we have to inform, rather discuss the plan with the l10n and docu teams. Will keep this in mind.

Let's just do the math here (not arguing the necessity of the change, just
so that for the next such UI change the UX team has things in perspective).

You changed "two strings", but looking at master and the changes marked as
fuzzy in my Slovenian localization, that really brought about (this is
really just an estimate) 70-100 changes in UI only, and that triggered
another estimated 200-250 changes in the help (a lot of places where
ordered and unordered lists had to replace the existing wording, and
numbering schemes replaces numbering styles etc.). So this means about
300-350 strings changed.

For each language, each l10 team will work on additional 350 strings.

So the approx. 100 active language teams will "sweat" with 100 * 350
strings. 35.000 strings?

And yet ... this change is just about two strings
