LO 3.5: Cannot Access Writer Templates

For all the years I used OO.o (since pre-1.0), File -> New offered a
sub-menu of 'From Templates'. This allowed me to open a document using one
of my pre-defined templates. An earlier version of LO worked the same way.

In the currently installed 3.5 there's no way for me to get to
~/.libreoffice/3/user/template/letter.ott. At least, none that I've
discovered in the File->Open or Customize menus. And, when I try to select
one of the Templates and Documents at the bottom of File -> New I see a
warning box, "Error creating a new document: templates already exist." This,
of course, makes no sense whatsoever.

How do I make my templates available?

Rich

Beginning with 3.5.0 LO changed the location of the templates to:
~/.config/libreoffice/3/user/template/.
If you want to use letter.ott as a template, you need to
File > Templates > Organize to import the template using the Template
Management dialog. It will place a copy of the letter.ott file in the
~/.config/libreoffice/3/user/template/ folder as well as list it in the
My Templates folder of the Documents and Templates dialog.

--Dan

Dan,

   I have a copy in ~/.config/libreoffice/3/user/template/letter.ott. Since
it's there, There's nothing in the "My Templates" directory. It's empty.
But, ...

[rshepard@salmo ~]$ ls .config/libreoffice/3/user/template/
basic.ott faxCoverSheet.ott letter.ott
calendar.ots home-letterhead.ott standard.ott
envelope.ott invoice.ott stock-certificate.ott

and nothing is displayed in the dialog box under anyone's Templates.

Rich

There's nothing there. See attached screenshot.png. Selecting 'Commands ->
Update' produces nothing.

Rich

Well, the mail list manager strips attachments. Both the templates and
documents windows are blank.

Rich

Hi Rich,

Please refer to the forum discussion "
http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=48030
", maybe you need to delete the user directory to fix the problem. But
be sure to save the necessary templates and other setting files before
the deletion. Hope it helps.

Regards

Michael

Hi
It is usually better to just rename your user profile rather than delete it.
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/UserProfile
That way you can still access all your Extensions, Galleries, Templates and
so on to copy them into the new profile a bunch at a time to find out which
caused the problem. Of course if renaming the user-profile didn't fix the
problem then you can always copy the whole thing back to reinstate your
settings.

If you want to upload attachments then it might be easier to use the Nabble
interface. Just find the link to Nabble in this email or navigate to the
right thread via the official LibreOffice website
Get Help - Nabble - Users
Then reply to any of the messages in the thread. Just above where you type
in the message are a line of buttons. The one at the end is "More" which
gives "upload a file" as it's first option. It places a link in the body of
the message so that people that aren';t using Nabble can just click the link
to see the image.

Michael,

rm -rf ../user/ worked to clear out the cruft.

Now, please remind me what I need to do to change the opening display from
that pictograph dialog to a blank page.

Thanks,

Rich

tom.

I have no extensions, galleries, or other stuff. Only a few templates. 98%
of my writing is done with LaTeX and I use LO only infrequently; mostly to
translate Wurd documents and Excel spreadsheets sent by clients.

Having a couple of backup directories makes it easier to restore content
when a FUBARed subdirectory needs to be rebuilt.

Thanks for your suggestions,

Rich

Hi
There is probably some other weird setting that is throwing your system out a bit.  Renaming also has the advantage of helping pin-point exactly which setting is throwing things out of whack, if you ever get time to do that some day later.

Hi
Ahhh, great.  If it's fixed then the most important issue has been dealt with.  Everything else is secondary to that imo.  It's nice to have a quick&simple way of solving future issues.
