LWP documents

How do I open LotusWord Pro documents? When I click on the document in Windows Explorer, I get a blank screen. When I enter LibreOffice and open the document, I get a blank screen. In LibreOffice, I File/Open, change the file selection to Lotus WordPro document (*.lwp), select the file and still get a blank screen.

Greg

Can you post the file on nabble? A brief check indicates that *.lwp files should open in LO/OOo.

i was just wondering-there are so many file formats in this world.if this
is the case now, what was the picture 5-10 years back!!its a total chaos.

Hi
If you want to post the document at Nabble just follow the link from this
email or navigate to the thread from the official website and reply to any
of the posts in the thread. Click on the button labelled "More" and the top
option in the list is "Upload file" which creates a link directly in the
message box.

I wasn't quite sure how to navigate nabble. I'm not talking of one file, I'm talking of hundreds and hundreds of Lotus WordPro documents. My client's 3rd Lotus WordPro installation floppy disk corrupted, so he cannot install his Lotus WordPro. However, he wants to be able to access his Lotus WordPro documents. I understood by the advertising on the LibreOffice web site that LibreOffice could read Lotus WordPro documents, that it was a "new feature" for 3.4.5 It was also posted as a "new feature" for3.3 I was just at the LibreOffice web site and since my posting of this question, now the ability to read Lotus WordPro documents is no longer there for 3.4.5, as well as being able to read other types of documents. However, under the new features of 3.3 IS the ability to read Lotus WordPro documents. So I downloaded the provided sample. LibreOffice read that sample fine, but still won't read true LWP documents. I used 3.3 and downloaded and installed 3.4.5

Greg

I think the first versions of Lotus Symphony could read Lotus 123 y Wordpro.
You can try downloading from this link:
http://www-03.ibm.com/software/lotus/symphony/home.nsf/home
Select Get Lotus Symphony 1.3.
The last version don't read Lotus files.

Hi
The lwp files should work. If they don't then it might be worth posting a
bug-report about the ones that don't
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport

They might like an example of a file that does work and one that doesn't.
That might help them see if there is some obvious and trivial problem.

Is it possible that Lotus Symphony can read Word Pro? You can download Symphony in rpm format for Linux.

I clicked your link you provided, thanks. I found a Lotus WordPro forum and many others seem to have that same problem. Lotus Symphony will not read .LWP documents. Interestingly, one person says he uses LibreOffice. I'm starting to think that LibrreOffice may read a certain version of .LWP documents.

I've no problem opening most lwp files in 3.3.3, 3.4.5, 3.5RC2 (linux).
However when I examine the files in a hex editor I see that they are
LWP7 versions. Samples that I tried (all work):

- Maps & Scales
<http://www.dkeith.clara.co.uk/maths/index.htm#lwp>
[note grapics show up only as blank frames, but text is fine]

- Networktest.lwp
<http://code.google.com/p/lwpfilter/issues/detail?id=4#c3>

Attachment 52242 in:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=41702
[Unteress_test.lwp]
only opens as a blank page & perhaps this is what you are experiencing.
However when I look at the file in the hex editor, it is significantly
different than the LWP7 files tested above. It is missing the LWP7 header:

So is it possible that your clients files are too old?

Hi
i guess that just adding the header to the older one would make it really freak out rather than fix it?

First, check that you do actually have the filters installed.
If you do a File > Open, do you see LWP in the list of available import filters ?

Second, the filters are not perfect, even when they are installed. Many LWP documents do not open correctly, if at all, especially if you have tables and/or inserted images in them. I have found that the filters only manage to successfully import the most simple of documents. Things with footers and headers tend to be misinterpreted or not represented.

Hi
Time to post a bug-report then, or use the existing one which seems to have got a bit muddled.

In wikipedia i found there is apparently a LotusWord viewer, see bottom of
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_Lotus_Word_Pro
but if that only helps convert 1 doc at a time then it's pretty useless.  Perhaps the link might be useful for the bug-report?

According to IBM their files 'should' open with no problems in MS Word
http://www-01.ibm.com/software/lotus/products/smartsuite/wordprofeatures.html
but i never believe anything big companies say until after trying it.  It's bad enough that a free product fails to deliver what it has apparently promised but paying too much money to buy something that also doesn't work would be the icing on the cake.

If you are not able to try opening a lwp file in Word feel free to send me a private email with a copy of one of the documents that doesn't work in LO as i might be able to try it in Word 2007 and Word 2010 later today or tomorrow.  I still think it would be better to let the devs have a copy of at least 1 file that doesn't work as there is far more chance of them fixing the filter.  If it does open in MS Word then there might be a way to convert the documents in large batches.

Tom

That's VERY possible. His, I believe, is from Windows 3.1.1

Greg

I specifically filter for LWP files. Thank you.

Greg

KeyView for Lotus is a WordPro document viewer.

It is probably Windows only, but might work under WINE if you are on linux.
NOTE: originally designed for Win95/3.1 (google to find out more)

ftp://ftp.lotus.com/pub/lotusweb/product/smartsuite/

Download file: Kvlotus.exe

Check that it will work with your documents and that they will look correct when printed.

If they do, output files as PDF as they are for reference only.
DO NOT GET RID OF LWP ORIGINALS. The day may come when that import filter will become totally correct.

If you can write script, do a directory crawl with print attribute to pdf.

Hope this helps.

PS: Google docs imports PDF and export ODF.

We have also a lot of old WordPro-Files in my company.
Some of them get opened by LibreOffice, but most of them do not and report
an error message.

So you still can't rely on this filter.

We're keeping an old LotusSmartsuite inside an Virtual Machine, and transfer
contents on demand via clipboard or DOC-Files...

Stefan

Done! Bug #45633 I included an attachment of an LWP file that won't open.

Thanks

Greg

I already have installed Key View for my client. However, he has trouble using it (user error) and has hundreds of files to view.

Greg

Sorry about the delay. Now that I've posted a bug report and included a file that doesn't (they already have the one that does), now what?

Greg
