Maltese Translations

Hey guys

My friend Warren Camilleri has been spearheading the Maltese translation,
and I would like to be able to contribute as well as be a co admin to this
project. Who do I need to talk to be another point of contact for
translation of libreoffice into maltese. Warren is already working on the
website translation. 2 questions arise for me

1) How and where do I access pootle

2) Do I need to contact warren directly to be given access or can a
translations administrator of the entire translation project add me.

Point your browser to https://translations.documentfoundation.org/mt/ . In the top-right you'll see links to log in and register.

2) Do I need to contact warren directly to be given access or can a
translations administrator of the entire translation project add me.

Yes we can, although it's not the preferred option.

Rimas regarding point two the other individual whose a friend of mine has no idea how to use pootle hes constantly asking me how to do the translations. Is it possible to make an exception this once regarding point 2?

I actually managed sorry for the noise turns out I had been setup with an account a while back, and last night spoke to warren and he gave me admin access.

The other issue which I raised in another thread is getting maltese added for the other aspects of LO that need translation the applications themselves etc.

I've just enabled the LibreOffice UI project for Maltese. Is there anything else you might need? :slight_smile:

You can see the list of projects here: https://translations.documentfoundation.org/projects/ . As you can see, suite's UI and Help are separate projects. I personally wouldn't bother with help until UI has progressed significantly, but it's up to you and your team.

Askbot is software that runs ask.libreoffice.org. I guess I'll talk to askbot's author and others about removal of this project from our pootle. He's using Transifex, so there's no need to duplicate the effort.

Website is already enabled for Maltese, and covers strings that are used by our CMS customizations and modules (not the textual content though), and a few other things.

Terminology is a special type of project. It allows you to upload .po files with translations of commonly used words (and, I assume, phrases), and is used by Pootle when offering suggestions.

With this information, I hope you can make a decision what other projects you want to see enabled for Maltese.

Rimas if we have a spell checker with words and its in po format we can upload that to pootle?

You have a spell checker with words in .po format???

Pootle doesn't offer spell checking, meanwhile most of the browsers do. And for pootle to offer suggestions from terminology, the terminology .po file would have to have an English word in "msgid" field, and an appropriate Maltese word in "msgstr". Hope this answers your question.

This is a spell checker that I believe to be in po format. Someone from the local LUG put it together. I was wondering if the translations for some words could automatically be included into pootle from it.

I doubt it's a spell checker. :slight_smile:
You can send the file to me, and I'll see whether it would work, but not necessarily today. :slight_smile:

Ya that is it. I want to see if he can eventually work on that as an extension for libreoffice. Currently that is available for download I believe on the LUG website.

Well, basically, we need an English-Maltese dictionary, containing relevant terms only (because the more irrelevant words it contains, the less useful become the suggestions).

In fact, Pootle can generate such dictionary for you, but it needs existing translations to do that. There are also other tools, but they need input as well. If you have say KDE or Gnome or something else localized into Maltese, and you intend to use same terminology as that project (or these projects), that could be used as a basis for your compendium. Or you can start from scratch and create the dictionary manually. This path would require most of effort from you, but the final product would be of best quality.

Ok I will forward this to Ramon the original creator of the extension, and see if he could put something together for us. Is there a particular format the file should be in in regards to the file extension and layout?

I just open the .po in Notepad++ and then copy and paste the lot into LO and skim for typos. A bit low tech but it's reasonably quick and easy :slight_smile:

I will admit I am not a native speaker so I am not familiar with the spellings, I would rather have a native speaker under take this task. I will bring this up at our next LUG meeting.
