Managing Templates in Writer

I recently installed v4.0 (v4.0.0.3, to be exact) and, of course, all the setup I finally accomplished in v3.4 is gone. My primary concern is the default style, which has reverted to .79" (2 cm) margins as the default. Being in the US, I'd rather have defaults of 1".

The help appears to be a bit behind the program, and I can't figure out how to save any changes so when I open a new document I get my 1" margins. Here's what I have done so far:

1. Change the margins, then save a new template named "Normal". This is insufficient, as it doesn't become my default template.

2. Change the default page style, then re-save the "Normal" template. Still no change.

3. Try to make this my default template. Help says go to File ... Templates ... Organize, but File ... Templates doesn't exist.

4. Go to Customize and try to add Manage Templates to the File menu. This appears in the Customize area, but never shows up in the menu even after leaving the program and coming back (although it remains in Customize).

I'd guess I'm missing a step somewhere, but I can't find what it is. Any ideas?

1. Change the margins, then save a new template named "Normal". This is
insufficient, as it doesn't become my default template.

LibreOffice does not work this way. It's MS Office that assumes that Normal
template is default one.
Which may cause quite a headache when copying documents to other computers...

3. Try to make this my default template. Help says go to File ...
Templates ... Organize, but File ... Templates doesn't exist.

Go for File → New → From template
(or similar - I do not have English LO 4.0 at the moment to check actual
spelling).
New template manager will fire up, which gives you opportunity to change
default template.

This does not work.

The File -> New menu has a "Tamplates" option, but all that does is go
to a window where you can select a specific template that, as far as I
can see, consists only of templates I have already created.

In my Writer, I see four tabs (Documents, Spreadsheets, Presentations
and Drawings), and under Documents there are two widgets - one marked
"My Templates" and one marked MediaWiki.

There does not appear to be any access to any default template.

In LibreOffice, there is no such thing as "default template".

You must create your own template, save it in template folders and then -
using mentioned window - select it. There should be option called "Set as
default" near top of the window. Click it.

From this moment on, all new documents will be created using this template.

First make sure you have a copy of your standard format default document
template saved along with all your other templates.

In my Writer, I see four tabs (Documents, Spreadsheets,

Presentations
and Drawings), and under Documents there are two widgets - one marked
"My Templates" and one marked MediaWiki.

Go into "My Templates" and select the template you would like to use as
default. After you select it, there will be a tab up top that says "set
as default".

Excellent - thank you.

Excellent - thank you.

When awaking my computer after the screen saver has been activated, the images in Writer are gone. Only the image frame containing a "Reading error" message is left.
Reloading the document get the images back. (Naturally it is only the document in memory who is influenced).
But sometimes I save without recognizing the lack of images and then I have to insert the pictures again.
Seems to be a LibreOffice - screen saver conflict.
Just given it a try. It happens on OpenOffice 3.2 Writer too if that matters.

Perhaps this is a Windows problem only? Found on Win XP and Win 7 not tried on other OS.
Others observed the same phenomena?
Some advise on how to get rid of this without deactivating the screen saver?

The actual path is simply File ... New ... Templates. Certainly not an intuitive place to look for it if I want to manage existing templates!

Once I found this (with your help), it was a simple task to set my new "Normal" template as the default and it seems to have worked. Many thanks!

Hi. What version of LO is it. Just as a test, in

Load/Save>General, try un-ticking "Save Auto Recovery

Information" and "Always create a backup copy".
This may be related to a long standing issue that is difficult to reproduce.

Sorry. I forgot. It is LO version 4.0.0.3.
I will give your suggestion a try. Thank you.

A simpler solution is to make a small change (to activate the save icon)
immediately after loading and then save the file. Once it has been saved by
hand, auto-saving no longer does any harm.

It's a bug. Well, more than 1 bug it seems. Being so rare makes it
difficult to trouble-shoot down to a single set of circumstances and some
serious attempts to do so over the years have just shown that there are
several different circumstances but it is practically impossible to separate
out one single set from the others.

Have you ever played Cluedo and got it down to either being Prof Plum or
Miss Scarlett with either the candlestick or the lead piping and known that
if it is the lead piping then it's definitely Prof Plum but if it's the
candlestick then it could be either of them. Add in several dozen other
factors and it starts to get tricky.

I am using LibreOffice on stationary computers only, but willing to try everything.
The error occurs from time to time, not regularly, so it is difficult to trace.

Yes, I am using this workaround. Always have a working backup. But it is a workaround not a solution.

Fine.
Good to know it is a bug.
Yes, it is very difficult to trace occasional errors. At the moment I have three computers with different settings running LO 4.0 . In the late 2 or 3 days no errors.
There must be a conflict somewhere, but very difficult to trace. :frowning:
The Microsoft solution is: update the drivers and restart your computer. Someone get surprised? (Of course it does not help at all).

As I told, I got the error in OpenOffice too. It is not a specific LO error.

Never played. But I see the point.

Hi
Yes, i vaguely remember someone saying it dated back to around 2.0.  Hopefully as the code becomes clearer and more streamlined then it might become easier to trouble-shoot or even find problems just disappear as cruft gets cleared.
Good luck and regards from

Hi
Have you found the guides on
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Publications
or just using the in-built help?  Both do lag a bit but the wiki-pages's Getting Started Guide is for the 4.0.0.  The chapters are all done but people are still proof-reading the full book.

Did you manage to solve the templates issue?

Didn't even know about this one. Have to admit that although I've had 35+ years in the software world (mostly in data base design, data modeling, and quality assurance), when it comes to LibreOffice I'm just a plain old user and don't know about everything that's out there!

Yes, thanks, I got the problem solved (see my message sent just before yours).
