Marginal references

Hi,
I'm wanting to prepare a document in writer with a main text body(justified) and marginal references on the right (and possibly also different ones on the left). Each paragraph will have at least one reference. The references need to be tied to their relevant paragraphs. If a subsequent reference is added and this makes the references exceed the height of the paragraph, following paragraphs must shift down to accommodate. Is there a way to achieve this?
Thanks
Gary

There is no built-in function for marginal notes on Writer, but you can "fake" it by using frames anchored to the paragraph or to the character and setting the position not by drag-n-drop, but by using their properties. You'll need to work a bit if you need the notes to be numbered.

Use a Table with three columns and as many rows as there are blocks of text (your "paragraphs") - probably without a border. Put your text in the centre column and the references in the others. You can even adjust the column widths after you enter your text, to suit how things turn out. And yes: the default row height is "Fit to size", so references and text will be moved as necessary to keep them horizontally aligned. The height of each row will be enough to contain the text in whichever column needs most.

I trust this helps.

Thanks for your replies; I think you've hit the nail on the head, Brian - helpful as ever. Seems so obvious now, should've thought of it myself - duh!!
