Hi
MariaDB is another project that forked, in much the same way as LibreOffice
did from OpenOffice, from MySQL around the time that Oracle took over
management of MySQL.
MariaDB worked hard to remain a "drop in replacement" for MySQL but has
developed it's own enhancements. Like LibreOffice it remains OpenSource
and has a lot of the original developers and community.
Apparently people are often now using MariaDB when they think they are
using MySQL as some distros have moved to using it by default instead of
MySQL, so maybe it's more like Go-oo was.
Anyway this is another of their "Stable" releases. I think in their case
they mean that it's gone through alpha and beta testing. I'm not sure what
else they mean by it.
Anyway there are people who use it as a back-end for LO's Base and who may
be interested to know of the new release.
It'd be really nice to hear of PostgreSQL major releases too because that
also integrates really well as the back-end for Base apparently.
Regards from
Tom
