MariaDb (v similar to MySql) beta-testing

Hi
Just thought that some people might want to try beta testing the MariaDb release candidate to see how well it works as a back-end for Base.  Perhaps comparing it against MySql to see how much more advanced it is although that's not really an issue anymore.

Tom ,

Do you mean testing MariaDB or the Connector with LO (so yes where to find)?

Tom, if your ar interested in LO Connector's to DataBases, please have a look a my question on de QA mailinglist <http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/libreoffice-qa/2011-December/000734.html>. The Native MySQL connector is broken for 3.5, we need someone to rebuild the extension (windows).

Hi
The MariaDb itself not the connector.  The connector is
nothing to do with them and i don't think they even know the
LibreOffice connector doesn't work in 3.5.x branch.  The connector is
part of the LibreOffice project and probably not even an official part
of it.  I simply copied the announcement from the MariaDb mailing list
to let people here know what is going on over there.

Hi
If the connector is working on other branches of LibreOffice but just not on the 3.5.x branch then perhaps posting a bug-report against Base might help?

Tom ,

I will do that, just wait if Alex our others comes up with a solution, who is a regular Windows Rebuild an put this in a updated extension.

Hi all,

Hi

The connector works (or at least until someone tells me otherwise) on
both _Mac_ and _Linux_32bit_ with 3.5 if you download it from here :

http://extensions.libreoffice.org/extension-center/mysql-native-connector-for-mac-osx/releases/1.0.1

I can not build one for Windows, because :

(1) I do not have a Windows machine I can use to build the connector on
(which requires building most of LibreOffice to get it)

(2) I would be incapable of fixing any build problems I might encounter
on the Windows platform.

I asked on the developer list 2 days ago whether one of the buildbot
machine maintainers would be prepared to build the connector, say, once
a month, but have had no reply.

Hi
Good work Alex!  Thanks for checking those and more importantly for giving the link.  I had forgotten until yday and then got swept up in doing a newsletter at work.

The ones you did for the Extensions site were a huge improvement on the connectors available elsewhere so maybe the Windows one that you put there works.

Hopefully the devs might start noticing Base a bit more one day.  The official BoD position on Base is to sit&wait until people naturally drift over to it.

I have tried arguing for actively promoting Base to get communities such as the MariaDb people interested in making a connector or even diving into the main code, perhaps setting an emailing list to keep the people working on different aspects of Base to gain advice and suggestions from each other rather than feeling isolated and forced into making decisions on their own without the support of the community.  All the ideas have been rejected in favour of a policy of sit&wait.  A few individuals have made efforts and the PostgreSql people seem to have had the most success but there have been promises from individuals in other communities too.
Many thanks and regards from

PS Happy Christmas.

There is a "List-Style" question about an issue with it, in one of the comments posted in the Extension Center. Something is now working for someone. Maybe someone might got look at it and see if they can figure out what the issue it.

The error message is at the bottom of the page.

Hi
I think
                        Heinrich Stoellinger
found his way to the lists and asked us here a week or 2 ago?  I'm sure i remember the name  I think Alex helped him although it might have been one of the other stars here that help people with Base in a very in-depth way.

If i mis-remembered and it hasn't been sorted then i'm sure it can wait until the new year.

Thanks for the heads-up. I was under the impression that I would be
notified automatically, as poster of the extensions, of any
comments/feedback that was made on the extension page. Apparently, this
is not so because the first I knew of any problems was when I read your
e-mail. This is...suboptimal to say the least. This means that the
extension developer has to read the page completely each time and at
regular intervals to see if anyone has made any comments...I'll see what
Andreas Mantke can do to sort this out (if at all possible).

Am looking into the problems. I am perplexed by the second one because
we have exactly the same platform and on mine the connector works in
3.3.4 and 3.5. The second commenter posted in French, which is fine for
me as that is my second working language, but if everyone starts
chipping in with their own language, most of the problems will go
unaddressed.

Hi
It might be good to have clickable links to the Nabble forum (or something) so that people are directed to ask questions in the users list or the devs list rather than in the comments.  It's possible that other Extensions devs are not always able to maintain their Extensions so a fail-safe would be nice.
