Moving Templates from 3.5.5 to 4.0

Windows XP, SP3

I created numerous templates in LO 3.5.5. I created the letter/template and
inserted input fields that would stop and ask the user to input the
appropriate data. Worked real well in LO 3.5.5.

We are hoping to upgrade to version 4.0.0.3, but when we try to copy or
import the templates, they don't stop at the input fields to prompt the user
to input the data.

We have tried to retype the letters/templates, inserting input fields, to no
avail. Is there a way to get the template to stop and prompt the user for
each input box?

Hi
Have you had any luck with this?  Sorry you haven't had any answers so far but hopefully someone here might be able to figure it out.

We found a 'work around'. If we open the template directly from where it is
stored on the network, the input fields stop and ask the user for the
appropriate data. However, this is a step backwards, and is extremely slow.
In LO 3.5.5 we were able to create a menu item that would open the templates
correctly (Tools, Customize, New Document from Template). When we do that
in LO 4.0. the template will open, but won't prompt for input. If we change
the way the menu opens the template (Tools, Customize, Open, Template
Manager), the template will open correctly. The catch is, if the user then
opens a regular document, then tries to open another template, the default
directory goes to the last place that the file was opened from. The users'
files are stored on a different server than the LO application files. Any
ideas how we can get around this? Hopefully speed up the opening of LO 4 in
a Windows network environment?

I am confused. when I use Tools -> Customize, the Customize dialog opens. I don't see where I can select /New Document from Template/ nor /Template Manager/. What do see at the top is four tabs with /Menus/ selected with /File/ menu as the default for the dropdown list. Perhaps you could give me better directions?
However, if I click the /Toolbars/ tab with the Customize dialog open, I see the Toolbar page. /Standard/ is the default value for the dropdown menu of toolbars. There I see /New Documents from Template/. If it is not checked, I can check it. This places its icon in the Standard toolbar directly below the Menu tool bar approximately below /Edit/. Now when I want to use one of my templates, I click the icon, the Template Manager opens. I then click /My Templates/ and select the template I want to use.
I describe what I have done as:
Tools -> Customize -> Toolbars. Check /New Documents from Template/ if it is not checked. Click OK to close the dialog. Now the Standard toolbar has the /New Documents from Template/ icon. Any time you have Writer open, you click this icon to open the Templates Manager. From here you can select the template you want to use.

Dan,

Here are the steps I took. Tools, Customize, Menus. I added a new menu
(call it Billing), then under menu content I clicked add, application, new
document from template. This adds a menu item called Billing. Tools,
Options, LibreOffice, paths would point to the template directory on the
network. In LO3.5 this would open the template the user chose, then prompt
them for input fields. In LO4.0 it opens the template manager, and they can
still open the desired template, but it doesn't prompt them for input.
*Prompting them for input is the key.

Sorry, I have run out of ideas myself.

Hi
So just editing the paths in

Tools - Options - Paths

doesn't work?

Hi Karen,

Unless someone has another idea, we will create an application that will
open the template from the network location. It's an added step, and takes
almost 1 minute to open the template, even if LO is already open. I've
increased the memory on the Graphics cache to 256 MB, but we aren't dealing
with graphics, so that didn't appear to make any difference (just trying
different things to speed it up). Any other ideas?

File a bug report, giving the detailed explanation you have put here,
mark it as a regression in the keyword field of the bug report, and put
Cedric Bosdonnat on CC (in the "add/edit user" list). The reason why
there is a performance hit may be linked to caching of the template list
that the new template manager dialog performs when accessing a drive and
if that is on a network, it might explain the slowness. Possibly, the
old template manager had code that performed better under similar
circumstances.

I will submit the bug report and let you know the number

Thanks, will have a look, but I don't have the same network setup as you, so I won't be able to reproduce directly.
