MS Office -> LibreOffice (compatibility problem)

Ooops! If you could just do one more test. If saved as a .doc does it still have the same problem?

Marc

PS. maybe it's a MSO .docx feature.

Same file saved in doc is opened correctly in Lib0 beta2 (Windows)... in .docx image is missing.

I see this recommendation "send sources as .pdf files" very often. Quite frankly, I really don't consider it a solution, except for legal and archival purposes. Why ?
1. It is another private format. Not as closed as it used to be, but still relevant on the "good will" of Adobe. I have yet to find a pdf file reader for Windows that does an equivalent job with font hinting and the like.
2. It screems "look but don't touch". Except for minor modifications using clunky techniques, the document cannot be modified and is much harder to annotate than a .doc or .odf document.

You are right Michel, but is simpler for other people to send pdf files (using PdfCreator for example) than installing other software like LibreOffice. In many cases company policy prevent users to install software not approved from the IT office...
If there are some difficult with many collegues... with suppliers or customers is a "mission impossible"
Doc (and other proprietary file format) is the evil... because if your sender use Word 2007 and you have Word 2000... you need to upgrade your software or you are unable to read the document. It's obvious... but not for all the people. Require odf files from your senders is very very difficult... but it would be the best solution

Hi Stefano:

Could you submit it as a bug? You can find the bugzilla here:

tux99-mga@uridium.org

I don't know if this has really been filed as a bug but there is one that looks like it here:

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31036

But I think this one is different.

Marc

PS. Let me know if you have a problem with submitting the bug. Thanks for the help.

It looks like Stefano has identified it as a bug with LibreOffice. You can read his notes. Someone will submit it and hopefully it will be fixed for the final version.

Marc

Filed as bug.... https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31357

Thank you guys.

Hi, just downloaded and install libreoffice beta 2 spanish and aopen a

Thanks for all of your help Stefano.

Anytime Arda. We are here to help.

Hi Francisco

LibO didn't have problems loading .docx, it had problems loading a file, .docx with a picture in it, at the top of the document. Try loading the sample that Arda left. Also read through the thread and you will see that it was about a specific type of formatted .docx file.

Cheers

Marc

LO all:

I always had problem with an image on the first line of a page when the anchor is on the left of the first line.

Try to make a three lines document and put the image on the second line to see what will happen...

Michel-André

Same result.... I put 3 blank line, 1st line of text, 1 image below the 1st line of text, 2nd line of text, other blank lines...
When you open with Lib0 there are only blank and text lines... image anchor is correctly on line 5 but there is no visible content.

I am going through the same process in a much smaller office. Once my users find LibreOffice they prefer to not go back to MS.

bill

Nice to hear Bill. How many desktops have migrated? It sounds like they still have MSO installed as well?

Marc

I downloaded both documents and when I tried LO first it acted as you
stated. However, when I viewed the .docx file in OOo and saved it as
.docx (the MSO 2007 format) it opened fine in LO with both tables and
graphs.
LO build 3.2.99.0
Kubuntu 10.04
Linux kubuntu 2.6.32-25-generic #45-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 19:52:42 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
If any of this helps!
Good luck!!!

Tom

Hi Tom:

Thanks for testing.

I think during the checking process, the file was modified. Someone should chime in to let us know.

I would say to really test it you would have to go through the detailed processed in the thread, create a file on MSO and then test try with LibO.

But the bug has been submitted and the devs will hopefully look at before the next release.

Cheers

Marc

Hi Mark,

These are the files, thank you.

Maybe feedbacks like this are valuable for LibreOffice?

You could try this extension:

http://katana.oooninja.com/w/odf-converter-integrator

which enhances compatibility.

It worked for me.

See you
