New brothers printer does not appear to print Landscape.

LibreOffice 3.5.3.2
Build ID: 350m1(Build:2)

Has printer administration been removed or the name changed in version
3.5.3?

KDE applications print good with CUPS and LPR.

What model of Brother do you use? Which driver?

I see you use 64bit version of system like me, but there is problem inside driver - the same configuration in 32bit works OK.
I cannot print in landscape but also from other programs.

In 64bit the LO print in landscape on virtual printer-PDF and other printer (HP) full OK.

I have got printer DCP770CW.

Hi Russ,
I have a Brother MFC-J6710DW connected via network which has this problem also. I'm
exchanging email messages with Brother tech support (Linux Support
<linuxsupport@brother.com>) but haven't found the source of the problem. It does
apply only to linux driver, landscape printing is working properly under
windblows-7. For me, it won't work in LibreOffice, Eagle PCB (board design), or
Okular (PDF view).

They say that it works for them. They installed OS 12.2 and tested with
LibreOffice and say it works for them.

Please send screenshots, copies, or any other pertinent information to that address
and maybe we can get this resolved.

Tom

I have a MFC-J6710DW . I'm using the 386 driver, I only found a 64-bit
for the scanner which I have not tried yet. My system is hooked up usb2.

Printer:
mfcj6710dwcupswrapper-1.1.1-1.i386.rpm
mfcj6710dwlpr-1.1.1-1.i386.rpm

Scanner:
brscan4-0.4.1-1.x86_64.rpm (Not installed yet)

Went back and tried again. I can print in portrait with lpr and
LibreOffice and Okular. on openSuSE 12.1. I have not tried on 12.2 Beta1
as I'm needing to reinstall it (YaST and zypper Quit working).

Not sure what to take screen shots of. When this first started Cups
reported print job as complete on landscape jobs. No errors in error
log. Now job is not even getting to cups. I'll report it to the address
you showed below., and I can test fixes if necessary.

I think I install the Win driver on my XP guest on Virtualbox and see if
it prints.

I have to print to pdf and then print the PDF to get around this on my Brother, printing is ok on my HP.
Must be something to do with the brother driver because Firefox won't print in landscaqpe either.

I have an older Brother printer that doesn't print Landscape. Good reason
to buy a different printer.

I install the brothers Win software on my VirtualBox guest XP system and
then printed s document that failed under the linux version. The
portrait and landscape versions both printed. I did notice when Win has
control of the printer it does not go thru CUPS. Not sure what path it
tkes but it works.

Finally got on the Brothers website and after creating account I had to
leave. Tommorow I will input what information I have.

Printing from FF has been a known problem for some time.

Tom

FF prints landscape on my HP, not the Brother.
steve

I had the same problem, and here's the fix:
In OO or LO, in the print dialogue, there is a "properties" button,
and from there, Device tab.

One of the dropdowns there is "Language". It defaults to PDF

If you instead select "Postscript (Level from driver)" then landscape
printing works.

It's a bug in OO and LO, and can be "fixed" for each
individual printing job. Unfortunately, I haven't learned a way to
make the fix permanent.

Helen

Hi.
That worked thanks.

I had the same problem with my Samsung printer that quit doing Landscape with my Mageia Linux distro. I found that it was not in fact a bug with LibreOffice but a problem with the printer driver. If the Brother uses SPL (Samsung Printer Language), and, it looks like it does, then you may have the same driver problem.

I solved my problem by installing the SpliX printer driver supported by the OpenPrinting.org site (Linux Foundation). You can find the installation routine here:

http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.linux.mageia.user/7431

If it solves the problem, the fix should be reported to both the Brother devs as well as the SpliX group so that they can update their printer compatibility page.

I no longer have to go to the properties button to change the settings on any of my print jobs.

Cheers,

Marc

Thanks Helen you saved my day. It works on openSUSE 12.1. I will try
installing driver on 12.2 beta1 or 2. See if it works there. yesterday I
proved it woked from win Xp on virtualbox. First time windows has been
used in over 9 months.

There we collect info - IMHO very useful - to not buying Brother & Samsung. Both companies made advertisement about their drivers for Linux, but the quality of this drivers is down.

In practice the only HP & Konica (not all models) works with Linux - of course if selected model support PCL and/or PostScript.

Actually, I would recommend to check with the OpenPrinting.org project if people are really concerned with printer compatibility, but, on the whole, this is just a recent glitch. I am sure it will be fixed. I suspect it is not really a problem with the actual drivers but with the dependencies that are needed with the SPL drivers.

I usually recommend Samsung as a good choice for printer and my son has a brother printer that worked 'out of the box' without any problems on Linux (it is an older model).

Cheers,

Marc

Thanks to the tip from Helen I can now print in landscape mode though a few extra
steps are required. I'll get in touch with Brother about the fix.

Tom

Now have most of my issues solved. Printer prints from L.O. Ok, Okular
ok and sveral other application. Did find some problems in the install
instructions for both printer and scanner. installed brscan4 and brscan-
skey. Looks like it is a command line tool with intervention needed on
printer.

XSANE scans, ok. Also found errors with YaSt handling of scanner
install. Manual install worked with corrected commands. Not sure if
scanner install with yast is openSUSE 12.1 bug or Brothers. Next step is
to install on 12.2 Beta2.

Thanks for your help.

Is there a brothers trouble ticket where I can add comments or should I
just start a new one?

Hi,
our scenario:
several clients use via ssh the same user-account and run a common prog
client1$ ssh -X user@server prog
client2$ ssh -X user@server prog
...
Every client starts its own instance of prog and get the output on the clients
screen.

However

client1$ ssh [-X] user@server libreoffice3.4 --display client1:0 --writer

will output on the server screen only.
What should I do?
