new version of LO gives gibberish for excel file.

Hi
I just downloaded an excel file from
http://www.taxpolicycenter.org/taxfacts/displayafact.cfm?Docid=205
The file is the excel version of Historical Source of Revenue as Share of GDP.
The newest, recommended version of LO opens the file as gibberish: LibreOffice Version 3.6.5.2 (Build ID: 5b93205)

My system runs Windows 7, 64 bit, AMD quad core, 4 GB RAM.

Can anyone explain or help me fix this?

A workaround is to fetch MS' Excel Viewer, then copy from that to a table in Writer for my document, but I would prefer to use LO for as nearly everything as possible.

Warmest Regards
David Teague

David,

This works just fine with LO 4. Of course, there might be other issues.

(win 7 64 bit, i7, 8Gb ram)

Met vriendelijke groeten, Salutations distinguées, Kind Regards,

Opens flawlessly with LO 4.0.1 rc1 on Win7, 64bit

Looked good with LO 4.0.0.3 with Linux Mint Maya

Could the download be corrupted? It is 38,912 bytes on my machine.

No problem opening it on Ubuntu 12.10 with LibreOffice 4.0.0.3.

David,

No problems with 4.0.1 RC2 opening the spreadsheet on Xubuntu 12.10 64bit

Regards

This file looks rather fine in LO 3.6.5.2 on Debian testing, amd64. Maybe there
are some issues I didn't caught at glance, but it definitely isn't "gibberish".

Could it be that this is related to your operating system (unlikely), LO copy
or user profile? Can you try opening this file as new system user?

No problem with LO 4.0.0.3 on PClinux 2013.02!!

Have you cleared the cache recently?;
CCleaner is a handy program to use whenever you shut down your
machine -
clears the cache of all that built-up junk, which
accumulates;
so you won't run into these problems where the machine wants to find
a MsFt program which you no longer have on it

You can find CCleaner here http://www.techsupportalert.com/ with
comments on how it operates, etc.

Hi

Opens fine in 3.6.5.2 on Windows 7 64 bit... The only difference between your
machine and mine is mine has 8Gb of ram.

Just a line to confirm that the hist_receipt_source_GDP.xls file opens
without any difficulty in LO 4.0.0.3 on my main box running 64-bit Ubuntu
12.04....

Henri

Opens fine in my Opensuse Version 3.6:build-304 (Build ID: 360m1(Build:304))
steve

It opens fine, Ubuntu, *Version 3.6.2.2
(Build ID: 360m1(Build:2))

Hi
So it's beginning to sound like there might be a problem with the install of LibreOffice rather than with the file.

David, can you re-download a fresh new version of LibreOffice?  Either the stable branch, 3.6.5,
http://www.libreoffice.org/download/?type=win-x86&lang=en-US&version=3.6.5
or the branch with newer features and greater compatibility, the 4.0.0
http://www.libreoffice.org/download/
or the 4.0.1 when that comes out in a few days.

While waiting for the download, or before starting on that, perhaps just try renaming your "User Profile"
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/UserProfile

Renaming the user profile resets all settings and configurations "back to factory defaults" so that usually fixes any weird problems and it's quite quick to try.
