Good evening
Probably another stupid question.

With a new computer running Windows8.1 I noticed, that files DO NOT open
any longer,
when I (double) click on their names or select them and hit ENTER
... as it used to work with all other computers / OSs in the past.

I DO HAVE to open Writer, Calc or whatever and then use the "open"
command from within the software.

Is that something peculiar to Windows?
Or another so-called "improvement" like the disabling of the styles menu?
Can I change this behavior?

There are no stupid questions.

With a new computer running Windows8.1 I noticed, that files DO NOT open any longer, when I (double) click on their names or select them and hit ENTER ... as it used to work with all other computers / OSs in the past. I DO HAVE to open Writer, Calc or whatever and then use the "open" command from within the software.

Like any application, LibreOffice cannot get involved until it is started. It's up to your operating system to start whatever application you want to use when you double-click a document file. LibreOffice will have set "associations" for .odt, .ods, etc. file types in your operating system when you installed it; you may or may not have accepted its offer to set associations for .doc, .xls, etc. file types.

No.

Can I change this behavior?

Yes. One way is to run the LibreOffice installation again, this time accepting the offer to set associations for Microsoft Office document file types (if that is your problem). Otherwise, you can set associations individually and manually. See

The clue is ".. a new computer.."

Chances are that .odf files aren't being associated with LibreOffice so
Windows doesn't know what to do with them when you double click. IDK how
to associate file types with an app in Windows, but it's probably a
right click operation.

in Explorer right-click on the file, Open With, select swriter.exe and
click on Always

I think there should be an option also during the installation of
LibreOffice.
