Printing page in landscape in 2 column mode

I am writing a page in landscape mode (US Letter) and in 2 columns but when I print it keep printing in portrait mode. Here is what I did:

* I created a new page (US Letter default to portrait)
* then Format->Page->Page -> checked Landscape
* then Format->Page->Columns ->2

Typed in some test text in both columns and printed the page, but the page keeps coming out in "Portrait" format.

What am I missing?

You may need to set the page layout in the Printer dialogue to Landscape
in addition to setting the page.

The printer setting is set to landscape already and the preview shows landscape correctly.

I saved the document as a .pdf and it prints correctly as a .pdf in landscape mode.

Mine is bald! Well, partly.

Anyway, have you tried it to see if you get the same?

LibreOffice 3.5.3.2

May be the layout is turned twice when you set landscape mode in both, application and printer?

I saved the document as a .pdf and it prints correctly as a .pdf in
landscape mode.

At least you found a work-around.

Hi
Errr, have you tried resetting your User Profile to get "back to factory defaults"?  Alternatively perhaps think of it as a fashion statement.

Are you sure, the printer gets this information? Please do not use the print icon from the toolbar, but use File > Print. And there set the paper orientation directly in the property dialog of the printer and print immediately.

Is the printing correct then?

Kind regards

Which version are you using? 3.5.4? I know you use Mageia for your OS, but did you use it for this? Was it a repository version or the LO download page version?

There was a bug about brochure printing [ 3 column landscape] if I remember correctly. I am wondering if your system is getting something similar.

I just tested 2 column printing, using Ubuntu 10.04 and 3.5.4.

I took a 3 column brochure and made it two column and printed the first page of text. It printed correctly.

Next I took that text and copy/paste into a new document that I made two column and landscape. It worked fine as well.

The only difference I did was change the column first then do the landscape. So I tried it in reverse. Every way I tried it does not give me the error.

So I cannot get your error on my system.

Sometimes I get print formatting issues, like the printout looks like it was printed as 2 or 4 pages per sheet but with only one page showing. The only way I had to get rid of such a problem with the printing issues was to "reset" my user profile, such as renaming the ".libreoffice" folder.

Could you try the "reset" idea and see if that fixes the problem? If it does not, then it must be some bug with your version of LO on your system. As I said, I think there was a bug dealing with multi-columns and landscape printing on one of the versions.

Sorry I could not help more than that.

Yup, same results.

After fiddling quite a bit and passing through pages multiple times though my printer here is the solution:

For some reason, LibreOffice, at the point of print, will open the print window and choose the printer driver "pdf" for my Samsung printer, which will not allow any "landscape" formatted documents at all (even without columns). It will only print in "portrait" mode.

The fix is to change the driver to "PostScript" (Print->Properties->Device(tab)->Printer Language Type-> "PostScript (Level from driver))

I believe this is a problem with the system setup and less to do with LibreOffice. However, Acrobat Reader does print correctly in cases where landscape mode is not possible.

Thanks for all of the help and suggestions!

Cheers,

Marc

Marc:

By chance do you have the following checked?

"Use printer metrics for document

formatting"

Tried it and it makes no difference.

I have tried out other software packages and some print correctly and others not. I think it's more of a system issue than LibreOffice.

Cheers

Marc

I never tired the "use printer metrics" since I have several printers. I use CUPS-PDF as my default printing. I use my HP Laserjet 2300dn for B/W and B/W duplex printing, and I either use my Epson duplexing inkjet or color laser for color printing. SO since each has different metrics, it would play havoc on formatting. I usually print a PDF version if I need to involve different printers. For Writer documents, I either Export to PDF or print to CUPS-PDF, depending on the need for specialty fonts.

I just wish LO would pick up the duplexing for both my duplex capable printers, instead of just one. It seems to be a hit/miss issue.

Maybe one day more of these printer issues will be eliminated, but we just have to live with it. The paper tray bug is the real big one for some business users, or so I have heard.

Well you cannot expect a package under 2 years to get everything right, even if it is based on a parent software. Especially if you try to fix all the bad and unusable coding in that parent software while you add features.

Glad your issue is solved.

One final note on this. I traced the problem back to a misbehaving linux printer driver. Here are the details.

NOTE: The following fix is really for users on the Mageia Linux distro, but could adapt this to your distro (except for MS Windows platform -- I am not sure if the driver is also misbehaving on the Windows platform)

*** NOTE: The problem occurred with a Samsung SCX-4200 Multifunction Laser Printer. ***

Hi
This would be great as a page in the Faq
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Faq

It's still being translated from the French one, slowly (because the couple of people involved are working hard at other things in LO).  The Base section is complete tho!
