Problem importing xls files

Hi, I'm trying to find out what's the difference between the attached files (SYLK format), because both were exported using the same program and one can be opened without issues (good.xls) and the other can't.

Can someone help me find the difference?.

Looks like the attachments were removed, here are the files:

Hi
Weird! Both open fine in LibreOffice 3.5.7 on Ubuntu 12.04 (at least i
think i'm on 12.04, might be 14.04 but that's doubtful)

Errr, anyone able to open on Windows?

For some reason bad.xls opens with Writer, not Calc, even when I say 'open with Calc.'
Good.xls opens just fine.

Libreoffice 4.3.2.2

Hi
Of course! So i'm definitely on Ubuntu 12.04 then.

Errr, just occurred to me i could reattach as ods. Only the o.p. will
get the attachment, of course. I've never heard of sylk files before.
The ending was the same as other .xls files but i gather that they
usually use .slk instead.

Saving as .ods dropped file-sizes from 86-90 Kb down to under 20 Kb.
Renaming the file-ending to .zip showed both looking almost identical.
The contents.xml didn't get colour-coded by GEdit even when i switched
between different mark-up interpreters.

So, i am completely clueless as usual! Just hope the ods files help

Yes!, that's exactly the problem I'm facing.

To clarify, if you rename bad.xls to bad.slk it opens just fine. The question is, why good.xls opens without problem?

My results are identical to Don Pobanz'--also LO 4.3.2.2 and Xubuntu 14.04.

Both open fine with LO3.6 on opensuse.

I think you will find that a .slk file is a symbolic link file
(equivalent to the linux .lnk) so it won't open directly in Calc. If the
spreadsheet file is at the place where the slk file expects it to be it
should open in Calc. If you deceive it into thinking that the .slk file
is a spreadsheet you should correctly get an error.

LOL wut? SYmbolic LinK is one of the oldest text data interchange formats.

Also the first time I heard of a linux .lnk file extension, which sound
silly since most fs used in linux supports symbolic links. I suppose it's
only a misunderstanding.

And, to clarify, the slk file actually have content and can be (usually)
opened by itself.

Sorry, my fault. I was really too hasty :frowning:
I take it all back. Please ignore my input. Ash on my head (as the
Germans say)

It is bug 78731, and problem character in your case is 'Ñ'.

Great to know that!.

I didn't see any earlier post in this thread, but if you set up
a Compose key (Linux) or the equivalent in Windows (AllCompose,
FreeCompose, AllChars, Wincompose, etc.--Google for Compose key
for Windows) you can make the Ñ without a problem. I found that
the latest version of AllChars won't let you choose the key you
want to use for the Compose key. I don't know about the others.
