PRODUCTNAME

Hi,

as far as I can see, the majority of the current changes, which force us to translate already translated strings again are of this type:

Specifies that *%PRODUCTNAME* saves ...

is relaced by

Specifies that *the **office**suite* saves ...

Does anybody know why were these changes necessary?

as far as I can see, the majority of the current changes,

well "current" is relative - those are from January...

which force us
to translate already translated strings again are of this type:

Specifies that *%PRODUCTNAME* saves ...

Specifies that *the **office**suite* saves ...

Does anybody know why were these changes necessary?

Underlying issue was with replacing it with the actual value..
* it didn't work/wasn't implemented for accessibility descriptors
  https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=142704
* a fix to replace it at runtime had too big of a performance impact
  https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=146971
→ so it was renamed to generic terms as a workaround-like solution

https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=146971 for the tip
of the problem where changing the PRODUCTNAME for the accessiblity
descriptions at runtime triggers accessibility features under gtk3
which has a 9x startup slowdown. I was able to bodge it for 7-3 and 7-2
without changing strings, but for trunk I changed things to not allow
PRODUCTNAME in accessibility descriptions which has the knock on of
needing these new strings.

Hi,
thank you for your explanation. I thought that these placeholders are resolved at build time.

There are still hundreds of %PRODUCTNAME in the strings. Will all of them be replaced?
Milos

No, only this relatively small set which appeared in the accessibility
descriptions of the .ui files.
