Should value of "name" attribute in <link> XML element be translated?

In the string

https://translations.documentfoundation.org/da/libo_help/translate/#unit=28588429

which has this value in English:

<link href="text/shared/01/05210700.xhp"
name="Transparency">Transparency</link>,

should the value of the name attribute ("Transparency") be translated?

I can see that it has been translated in some languages, and not in others.

Oh, there are actually *3405 *places with a *name="..."* attribute in the
LibreOffice 4.4 Help:

https://translations.documentfoundation.org/da/libo_help/translate/#search=name%3D"&sfields=source&soptions=exact

So it would be nice to know whether they should be translated or not. :slight_smile:

The name attribute is not used in generated help. It does not matter,
whether you translate is..

So how come the attribute is there in 3405 places (on different elements,
though) if it is not used at all?

And how come the guide, which I am now aware of thanks to Sophie, says:

"*name* is the displayed name of the file content. It has to be localized".

in the section about <link> elements (
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UI_and_Help_files_Content_Guide#.3Clink.3E.3C.2Flink.3E
)?

To me, that seems to contradict what you said – or did I misunderstand
something?

Maybe designers of help format thought, that name attribute would be
used in the future. But it never happened. It would make little sense
to remove this attribute now, it would just create work for everyone.
(E.g. to update translations.). Not to mention that there are plans to
bin this help format, and use wiki instead.

I'm the author of the guide and Iyes I thought it was used :slight_smile: I'll modify
the guide and thanks Andras for your explanation.

While it is not used maybe it was intended as a tooltip text for html links
or titles (in help) or something like that? Maybe that could even be
implemented with not too much of an effort.

It would be possible. However, 99% of the name attributes are
identical to link text. They do not add extra information.

As I could see that the guide hadn't been changed yet, I updated it. Now it
reads:

"* name is a completely unused attribute. Localizing it will have no effect
whatsoever."
