Special Character - checkmark

I’m trying to import a special character = checkmark into a vide editing
program. I read you hold down the Ctrl key and type in the character number.

It seems the checkmark in Libre Writer is Decimal 61692 – is that correct?

When I hold down the Ctrl key and type in 61692 on the number locked number
key pad just 61692 appears in the video editing program, not the checkmark.

I’m subscribed to this list by digest so would you please also CC or BCC me
along with posting on this list as I get the digest many hours if not the
next day.

Thank you!

Not even close. Decimal 61,692 or hex F0FC would be in the Unicode Private Use Area--meaning it would depend on the font you were attempting to use.

In LibreOffice, with a specific font selected active you would enter U+F0FC on the document canvas, and then use <Alt>+X to convert from Unicode to the glyph at the codepoint. If not defined in the font, you'd get a generic undefined glyph.

Instead, try a known Unicode point for a check mark, and a known font (e.g. OpenSymbol).

Type U+2611 and then <Alt>+X to toggle. If you don't like the box, try U+2713 and toggle.

Greetings,

To insert a character using a number sequence requires the use of the
ALT+code combination, not the CTRL+code combination. In WORD, typing
ALT+61692 does insert a checkmark. However, in most other applications
(such as Notepad, Excel, WRITER) typing this sequence is identical to
typing ALT+252 (252 is the modulus of 61692 and 256); this sequence
produces a superscript 3 character. If you want to insert the
checkmark, the only thing I can think of is for you to insert it in a
WRITER or Word document (the easiest way being Insert > Special
character), and to copy/paste the checkmark in your video editing
program.

I hope this helps.
Rémy.

Stuart … The U+2713 in Open Symbol worked perfectly!

Thank you so much.

I was also trying to copy/paste in a word underlined ino the video editing
program.

If I wanted to add *Your* – how would you suggest I create that to be
copied and pasted in?

In Libre Writer, I typed in *Your* using the Open Symbol font and it copies
the word but not the underline.

Thank you!

Charles,

Well you could try the Unicode combining glyphs -- U+035F COMBINING DOUBLE MACRON BELOW

Enter "U+0059U+035fU+006fU+035fU+0075U+035fU+0072" and then toggle with <Alt>+X, effectiveness will vary by font.

Alternatively, LO provides an artificial underline effect from the 'Format Chracter' dialog (Format -> Character on main menu) on the 'Font Effects' tab: Underlining decoration.

Stuart…

Thanks for sharing your additional thoughts.

Weird thing. On my old Dell Latitude laptop running W10 doesn’t seem to
display when the Numbers Lock is on/off. No light, no designation on screen.

When I type in U on the keyboard and then press the Number lock key and
then type in the first number after a zero in any of these sequences the
cursor jumps to other areas of the Writer document. I then tried U+035F in
Symbol font it created an underlined Your but when I copied and pasted into
the video editing program it just copied Your without the underline.

Maybe it’s a quirk of this video editing program. I’ve posted on that video
editing program forum to ascertain if it’s a feature they offer under
another page or need to develop.

Thanks again!
