Start a list at a level other than 1

Is it possible to /start / a list at a level other than 1? If so, how?

Here's why I want to find this out. I've created five different paragraph
styles of headers, and each successive header's indentation is a 1/2"
greater than the last. From hitting Enter directly after any of these header
styles, I want to automatically enter a list that has the same level of
indentation as the header just above, but it can still be promoted to the
left or right.
