The translation of Sheet1

Hi,

In LibreOffice Calc's Turkish translation, we have some localization
issues about the translation of the following words:

Calc
Spreadsheet
Sheet

Calc is translated as "Hesap tablosu- Calculation Table" which is the
best choice. Because we actually do not have the exact translation of
the concept "spreadsheet" so we use both Calc and Spreadsheets
translation as Hesap tablosu.

Also, the situation of sheet is quite confusing, sheet means a the
paper of a book( as page). And it is translated as "Çalışma Sayfası"
which means more like "WorkSheet".

This worked so far. However it creates a usability issue in the user
interface. You may see the following screenshot:

http://b1112.hizliresim.com/s/8/zp29.png (Windows)
http://c1112.hizliresim.com/s/8/zp2v.png (GNU/Linux - KDE)

You may see that there is no enough space left for the Sheet tabs. The
bottom bar takes more space by default. In my opinion, "Çalışma
sayfası" takes too much space, and there is no need to define it like
this. Also there is a lack of animation for selecting the sheets, and
you may confuse the tabs. "Sayfa"(Sheet) will be better both in
meaning and in usage. So i want to replace the translation. With this
change tabs will look as follows:

http://c1112.hizliresim.com/s/8/zp2k.png (Windows)
http://a1112.hizliresim.com/s/8/zp33.png (GNU/Linux - KDE)

This will be a better look by default, and it will be easy to
understand the sheets.

Here is my question:

I've found the traslation strings for:

Sheet2
Sheet3
Sheet4

However, there is no Sheet1, i thouht that it is derived from Sheet
and it seems like the string is here:
https://translations.documentfoundation.org/tr/libo34x_ui/sc/source/ui/miscdlgs.po/translate/?unit=3506590

I am not very similar to the KeyID system, and i couln't find how to
activate it(it think it will be ready for the next beta relase). So i
need your assistance to find the Sheet tabs translation string.

With this change, the new tabs as Sheet5 and more will be
automatically named as Sayfa5 etc instead of Çalışma Sayfası5.

Regards,
Zeki

I looked it up for you. All Sheet+number is generated from the same string.
https://translations.documentfoundation.org/tr/libo35x_ui/translate.html?search=ftlN&sfields=source&sfields=target&sfields=notes&sfields=locations
What you found, literal Sheet2, Sheet3 and Sheet4, those are something else.

Just to be sure: won't changing the string break existing documents in any
way?
(I have been thinking about adding a space at the end of that string, so it
would give "Leht 1", "Leht 2", etc. in Estonian, because not having a space
there looks quite awkward.)
And on a related note, will changing the translation of e.g. paragraph
styles break anything in existing documents?

Hi

In the Esperanto translations we use
Kalkulilo (calculation tool) for Calc
Kalkultabelo (calculation table) for spreadsheet, very similar to what you are using,
Folio which means leaf/sheet (of paper).

Hi

I have read the wiki page on Translation for 3.5:
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Translation_for_3.5

What happens as the bug fixes to code are made and there may be changes to UI strings? Do they put the new strings into PO files and update the ones in LO 3.5.x in each language area? Where to we translators work during the release process? How do we know when there is work to do on the release?

UI changes will come to an end soonly. December 19 is the deadline of
hard string and UI freeze, so string will not change after that date.
Or at least every change will be announced here. I update PO files in
Pootle for all languages regularly. I usually announce it in this
list. Surely, I will update them after the string freeze. I take
translations from Pootle before every release.

Best regards,
Andras

Hi Andras,

As we start working on translation after the freeze, is it possible, if any
change occurred, to announce the exact modified po files?
This is necessary to speed up our translation work.

Thanks in advance.
