to bug or not to bug that is the question

Hello,

I don't know if this is the best place to ask this question but I could not find any better : there is a function in Calc that has been removed between LO3.3.3 ad LO3.4.3, but I don't know if that was made on purpose or not.
If it as removed accidentaly, then maybe I could list it as a bug.
But if it's not, then I should let it be, eventhough I would have liked for this feature to stay.

The feature is the "Crtl+Alt+ArrowKey" command in LO Calc. It still is implemented but does not work any more when you are editing a formula. Not sure I am very clear, this is how it works :
- if you have, say, cells A1 to A5 that contains something and that you are on cell A2 then pressing Ctrl+Alt+Down will lead you directly to A5. This is useful when you want to select quickly a range of cells to create a plot for instance.
But it does not work when you are editing a formula:
- select a cell
- write a formula, for instance "=1+2*"
- using the arrow keys (not the mouse) try to select a cell whose reference you want to insert in the formula. For instance so that it becomes "=1+2*D7". Arrow keys works fine but Crtl+Alt+ArrowKey will lead you directly to the last line/column of the document, whereas it used to move the cursor until a full or empty cell is found (non-empty cell if you're currently on an empty space or an empty cell if you're on a cell containing something).

I couldn't find a changelog of LO3.4.3 on libreoffice.org (results returned by seeks using the "site:libreoffice.org" keyword are irrelevant) but I managed to get a changelog from some third-party website, not directly linked to LO. I'm not sure this changelog is complete but I could not find what I was looking for on it. It's not listed as an existing bug on libreoffice's section of freedesktops either.

So what should I do ?

Cheers

Doesn't it work if you simply press Ctrl+Arrow?

I don't know your OS, but in Win XP it jumps to the first/last cell with
data, unless I misunderstood your question...

A little off topic, but when searching for LibreOffice documentation,
you might want to include "inurl:libreoffice" instead of
"site:libreoffice.org".

So what should I do ?

The behaviour you're describing sounds like a bug to me. I think you
should check if the bug has already been filed. If not, file a new
one (bugs.freedesktop.org).

Hi,

You are right, Ctrl+ArrowKey is enough, my mistake.

I don't know your OS, but in Win XP it jumps to the first/last cell with
data, unless I misunderstood your question...

Ctrl+ArrowKey works this way for me too, except when I am editing a formula and want to add a cell's reference, in which case it brings the cursor directly to the first/last coloumn/line of the document.

It worked fine with LO3.3.3 but doesn't any more with LO3.4.3

My OS Ubuntu Linux 11.04, but I don't really see why it should be platform-dependent.

Cheers

Have you tried Ctrl+Shift+ArrowKey?

Hi,

Have you tried Ctrl+Shift+ArrowKey?

The problem is not about being able to select a range of cells it is merely to move down to a certain cell which reference has to be inserted into a formula. I have not tried, but I assume that if Crtl+Down does not behave properly then Ctrl+Shift+Down won't (I'm sorry I forgot to bring my laptop's power supply with me today so I won't be able to test Ctrl+Shift+Down today nor to send you the *.ods file - which could have made things easier).

In my case, I would like to create a plot of speed against position. I have some position values in column A and speed values in column B (let's say from cell B2 to B100), but I want to create a column D which cells will be equal to the speed of column B divided by a number I manually inputed in cell B102, for instance "=B2/$B$102" (though it is true that I could have been smarter to put this value somewhere else than at the bottom of the document). So, I start by selecting Cell D2, I enter formula "=B2/", then move the cursor from D2 to B2 using the left arrow key and eventually hit Ctrl+Down which, surprisingly enough, leads me directly to B541654 (or whatever) instead of B100.

By the way, I already checked that this behavior could be reproduced with a new file, and thus, it is not related only to the file I was working on but also works for any other file.

I guess I will be opening a bug issue on freedesktop very soon. Please tell me if you are able to reproduce it in your environment first.

Cheers,

Gael

Sorry, I misunderstood your problem. Yes, I can confirm the behaviour
you are describing. Using Ctrl+DownArrow when editing a formula, the
selection jumps to the end of the spreadsheet, which is unexpected.
I'm using LibO 3.4.3 Windows 7 x64. I've checked LibO 3.3.3, the
problem does not seem to occur in the older version.

I guess I will be opening a bug issue on freedesktop very soon. Please tell me if you are able to reproduce it in your environment first.

If you've filed a bug report, mention the bug number here. I'll add
my comments to the report.

Hi
It is only supposed to jump to the end of the worksheet if there is nothing else entered between the cursor and the end.  If there was a big gap and then a few figures the cursor should jump to the first value in the list and the next tap would take the cursor to the end of that list.  It's really nifty and useful when it works

Hi
The LO build for Windows is a little different from the Gnu&Linux, Bsd & Mac build.  Also in some OSes it's easy to re-configure global settings for many more key combinations.    Finding the limits of the problem can help with sorting it out.

I am sorry the bug already exists (#39212). I did check that the bug didn't exist before sending my first e-mail but unfortunately, at the time I used "Alt" in my search query keywords even though the key "Alt" has nothing to do with the "Ctrl+ArrowKey" feature (at the time I was mistaken and thought the keyboard command was "Ctrl+Alt+ArrowKey").

I'll just add a comment on bug 39212's issue then.

Hi
Wow, nicely found! :)  Thanks for adding the link to the thread so other people can use it in the future too.

It's all good and works out in the end.
