Unable to connect to Access DB

Running LibreOffice 3.4.5 on Windows 7 Home Premium laptop.
Downloaded LO last week and all is fine so far with Write and Calc. But when I try to connect to an Access DB. I get an 'unable to connect, maybe necessary data provider is not installed'. What data provider would I need and where can I download it? TIA

Hi
I am not sure how that link is supposed to help Donald with his question?  Access uses something called Jet and something called MDAC?  How can Donald find out which version of Jet is being used in their Access?  Would finding out even be relevant to Donald's question, or would it only help with that unhelpful page?

Hi Tom

The page lists the downloads for the data drivers needed to connect to
an Access database - from anything other then Access, Base included, on
a Windows OS.

They don't ship with Windows and therefore the user needs to go get
them.

Once installed the questioner should be able to connect following the
instructions in the help file.

If I not in a mistake, the problem is derivated because is a regressión in 3.4 version and the SDBC drivers to connect with diferent MS access version, weren't shipped with LibreOffice 3.4. I reported a bug about this regression.

This is solved in 3.5, which in other side seems to will be a very good version.

OK, where to download has been established. But what file on that
page should the OP download and install? That has not been answered by
anyone yet.

Thank you all for contributing. I checked the link originally provided and it seems to be download links to various Data Access Components that were not included in some of the older versions of Windows. Since the Help files I opened didn't mention Windows Vista or Windows 7, I am under the impression that the DACs needed may be on my computer somewhere. I will have some time tomorrow and Wednesday so I will poke around the MS Knowledge Base to see what I can find out.

The two Access databases are not crucial to me. They are personal

Hopefully as I get more familiar with LO, I will be able to help with some of the replies.

Hi Donald,

Since the Help files I opened didn't mention Windows Vista or Windows 7, I am under the impression that the DACs needed may be on my computer somewhere.

Yes, they should be included by default, at least in Windows 7, I can't
say for Vista.

There was effectively a bug in the 3.4.x versions of LO, in which a
necessary library was missing, which prevented from accessing. This was
resolved for 3.5. The last time I tried it (before the release of beta
versions of LO 3.5, it was working).

I went to the Download page to get 3.5, but it only offered 3.4.5 or 3.3.4 -- I'll check back often to see when 3.5 is available.

Hi
The 3.5.o has not been officially released yet but you can get a pre-release version to test-drive from
http://www.libreoffice.org/download/pre-releases/
If you find bugs please send in bug-reports to try to help get the official release better.  Apparently it is already pretty good tho.

Hi
The help files are really well worth avoiding.  They are really pretty rubbish now.  Try the proper official documentation instead either from
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Publications
or
http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/documentation/
(same guides but the wiki shows shows more and also has some 3rd party unofficial guides that people have found useful)

OK Guys

Don't we need a "Known Problems" List here somewhere???!!! This is something you come across on many Software Sites as new versions come out. I think it would help a lot of people who are investigating moving TO the new Software OR moving UP TO the latest version.

I can start off by suggesting...

1) LibreOffice Base DOES NOT connect to older OpenOffice Databases. (SDBC Driver error)

2) (From what I'm reading) LibreOffice Base DOES NOT work with SQL Connector under Linux.
(I hope somebody can correct me on this as this is the way I want to go but reading about it seems to suggest this is a "No Go" at the moment.)

3) Use ONLY Java 1.6.0_21 with LibreOffice Base to get best performance.

4) .................. (I'm sure others can add to this list.)

Let's "park" this somewhere and have it updated as things get fixed or change???

Hi
The French team made a very nice FAQ (=Frequently Asked Questions) and that 'is' being translated into English but Documentation is a very tiny team and needs a lot more people if we want things like that to get done.  People would rather show-off on a list like this than put the work in to something like documentation (err i am one of those that i am criticising btw).  Some people do both of course ...

Ian,

Don't we need a "Known Problems" List here somewhere???!!!

you've seen this one:

http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/3.5#Most_annoying_bugs

Nino

No I had not - Thanks Nino.

But why NEVER any mention of Base problems!!!???
I still think a "User Based" site for this would be a help!

As for me, I don't use base extensively at the moment, so I have no distinct
opinion on that.

Nino

Hi
I think they avoid listing the Base problems because there are not enough electrons in the world.  Possibly i'm just having a bad day and it will all look much happier tomorrow tho.
